Charles Gunther Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2017.
Charles Thomas "Chuck" Gunther, 70 years young, passed at home September 3, 2017. Chuck was born November 25, 1946 in Ventnor, NJ and grew up in the Chelsea Heights section of Atlantic City. He graduated from Holy Spirit in 1964, tossing the school's first no-hitter in baseball. He went on to receive his B.A. in Elementary Education in 1968, followed by a Master of Arts in Guidance in 1973 from Glassboro State College. He was President of his Glassboro senior class, and introduced President Lyndon Johnson at the 1967 Glassboro Summit. Married in 1977 to his devoted wife, Sue, they settled and raised their son and daughter in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, where Chuck would soon become many things to many people. Chuck taught, inspired and mentored thousands of  Northfield, NJ children (and children of former students) in his 33 year career as a teacher and student council advisor at the former Mill Road School and current Northfield Community School, until "Mr. G" retired in 2001. Throughout the years, Chuck's involvement in many organizations and capacities would come to define his character as a husband, colleague, friend and father and as a man of the utmost integrity, service and selflessness. A former member of the Somers Point Jaycees, he was an original member and former President of the Egg Harbor Township United Republican Club, earning the 2009 Bob Reed Legacy Award, given to the club's most dedicated and tireless volunteer. Chuck also served on the Republican Atlantic County Committee. He was a board member and President of the Tilton Village Recreation Corporation pool for over 25 years, passing summer days by clowning with kids at the snack bar. He also had served on EHT Recreation Commission, and most recently, EHT Zoning Board. As a father, he coached and instructed countless youth in soccer at Pleasantwoods, and basketball and baseball for EHT Youth Organization. He arduously delivered The Press of Atlantic City for 18 years, earning "Carrier of the Year" in 2009 so his son wouldn't have "a dime of college debt". He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sue (Hornberger), son, Shaun, and Lauren (Roesch) of Egg Harbor Township and daughter, Heather, of Egg Harbor Township. Granpa will also be terribly missed by his 3 grandsons, Grant, Declan and Grady Gunther. Chuck is also survived by sister in-law Beth (Hornberger) Sipe (Bob), of Ephrata, PA, niece Leah (Sipe) McDermott (Brian), of Ephrata, PA nephews Derek, of Lititz, PA, Brady and Ethan Sipe, of Ephrata, PA, and brother in-law Michael Hornberger, of Lancaster, PA. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles J. and mother, Rita (Ryan) Gunther and parents in-law Paul and Jane (Hassler) Hornberger. Friends and family are invited to attend the Visitation from 1:00-3:00 PM immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Jeffries & Keates Funeral Home, 228 Infield Avenue, Northfield, NJ, 08225. Condolences may be left at www. jeffriesandkeates.com In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Fox Chase, Department of Medical Oncology, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Nashville, TN.

Sue & Family,
Anne and I were sorry to hear of Chuck's untimely passing. We have been friends for about 50 years and we were all part of a group (mostly at Gables in Margate) before any of us were married. I even remember a trip to Fla. with Chuck and 2 other guys back in the day. He will be missed by all. May he rest in peace.

I grew up in Northfield and attended Mill Road School back in 1978. Mr Gunther was one of only a few of my favorite teachers - he made learning fun and was a great mentor to so many. I'm so very sorry for your loss; he was a wonderful person.

Dear Sue, I was so saddened this morning when I saw this I couldn't believe it. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family at this very sad time. Chuck and I had many interesting conversations while waiting for the papers all those years. He was a true gentleman in every aspect of the word.
