MILES HERVEY, SR.,96
Gainesville - Miles Hervey Sharpe, Sr. PhD, 96, longtime resident of Gainesville, Florida, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013 in the Life Care Center of Gwinnett in Lilburn, GA.
Hervey was a native of Bushnell, Florida, son of the late Melwyn H. and Eloree Still Sharpe. After receiving his Bachelor's and Masters Degrees from the University of Florida, he taught vocational agriculture in two counties in Florida, Henry and Glade. After earning a Ph.D at the Pennsylvania State University, he returned to Florida where from 1955 until his retirement in 1977, he was with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Science. He served in a dual capacity as Editor/Department Chairman of the Agricultural Experiment Stations; Communication Specialist and Chairman Department of Agricultural Extension Service. After retirement the U of F honored him with Professor Emeritus title.
He served on the board of the Gainesville Community Ministry and was a member of the University Kiwanis Club, and the University of Florida Athenaeum Club. He was active in Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Phi, and Sigma Delta Fraternities.
Dr. Sharpe was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Sharpe in July 2013 after 71 years of marriage.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Miles and Priscilla Sharpe, and by his grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 1:00 P.M., in the Chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street with Dr. Don McGarity officiating. Entombment will follow in Memorial Park Central Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Florida Baptist Children's Home.

I was very fortunate to know Hervey and Gladys Sharpe. When I was office manager for Northwest Baptist Hervey would frequently come by the office to visit. When they moved from Gainesville I missed his visits and friendship. They were faithful in their gifts to Northwest even after their move. My very best to your family.

Hi Miles and family,
It has been far too long since we last saw each other. I am so sorry this is the occasion to get in touch again. Your father and mother were so nice to me. I have always had a very special place in my heart for them. I am so sorry for you loss. I lost my father in 2004 and mom in 2011. We were lucky to have such great parents. I hope to see you on Saturday. Take care.
