Charles Horvath Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2024.
Charles Alexander Horvath, 81, of Wassaic, NY, passed away on October 1, 2024, with his wife and two children by his side. He was the beloved husband of Deborah (Deitz) Horvath for 58 years and will be sadly missed.

Born on December 21, 1942, in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Louis and Elsie (Tuba) Horvath.

He was a graduate of Bassick High School in Bridgeport and Springfield College. Charles spent most of his life as a teacher and coach in both public and private schools. He taught English and History at the Rectory School in Pomfret, CT from 1974-1987. After Rectory, he taught at the Forman School from 1987-1997.

Charles and his wife Deborah bought an antique cottage on Bog Hollow Road in Wassaic, NY in 1989 where they have lived for the past 34 years. They spent much of that time tending to their garden on the hill and raising three adored golden retrievers. His greatest love was his family, the quality time spent, and the serenity of nature that surrounded them.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by their two children, Laurence (Angelique) Horvath of Galway, NY, and Jessica (James) Stewart of Harwinton. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, Drew, Kaya, Dillon, Van, Nika, Daisy and Dawson. He also leaves behind his younger brothers Michael and Louis Horvath.

Charles was endeared by his family and those he encountered for his gentle soul, warm smile and loving heart. He loved nature and Henry David Thoreau. "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at Sharon Hospital who cared for Charles with great kindness and compassion.

I was a classmate of Charlie at Springfield College Class of 66. We lived on the third floor of Alumni Hall. We discovered that we had a common connection having both grownup in Bridgeport. I would have been a classmate of his at Bassick High School but we moved from the area to Newtown when I was in fifth grade.

In the summer of my freshman year I met a sweet girl from Fairfield, Barbara Kaufman, who I began a wonderful relationship with. It turned out she knew Charlie“s girlfriend Deborah and that was an interesting connection.

I remember Charlie as a kind, thoughtful and warm person. I am sure he was a wonderful partner, parent and caring teacher.

Springfield College was a special school and I am sure Charlie took much from that time to guide him on his journey.

Sending my deepest condolences to all of you and may his spirit live on in all your hearts as you journey forward
