Charles Kelly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2015.
Chuck Kelly, 91, passed away Aug 1, 2015, as a result of complications following a planned surgery. His family remained close with him during this unexpected turn of events.

Chuck was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 and hired on with the "Phone Company" in Tillamook, Oregon, in 1948. In 1950 he married Ernestine (Amarantus) Kelly. He transferred to Newport and they enjoyed raising their two children, Patricia and Gregory, while living along Yaquina Bay. Ernestine passed in 1967 and his son Greg passed in 1991.

In 1968 Chuck married Agnes (Frieberg) Kelly. They transferred to Pendleton that year and in 1970 transferred to Portland. During their marriage they enjoyed traveling and took many road trips.

In 1976 Chuck married Gwenda (Grindle) Kelly and his family expanded to include Gwenda's daughters, Lizbeth and Sara. Chuck and Gwenda both retired from the phone company in 1984 and soon became members of the Webfoot chapter of the Alpenlite travel club. They enjoyed many years of snow birding and made such good friends through their travels with the Webfoot chapter that they eventually moved to Salem to be closer to many of them. They celebrated Chuck's 80th birthday on their last trip south. The travel group remained a tight group of friends even after the trailers were gone and after Chuck and Gwenda moved to Beaverton in 2010 to be closer to their daughters.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife Gwenda, daughters Pat (Kelly) Courtney, Lizbeth (Grindle) Fuller, Sara (Grindle) Padilla, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; as well as his cherished nieces Phyllis Anderson, Sharon Cox, Margaret Pichette, Kelly Nelson, and their families.

A celebration of Chuck's life will be held at 11am, September 14, 2015, at Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, Oregon.

Chuck will be laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens in the garden of the Apostles.

Chuck married my sister, Ernie, and I was
proud to be in the wedding party. My husband, Jack, and I spent many good times
with Chuck and Ernie. We both had children and shared many fun visits with the Kelly's. Chuck had such a nice smile and really enjoyed a good laugh. We were fortunate to spend time
with his parents and sister Jayne. Our children remember our visits to the
house on Yaquina Bay.We are happy that
Chuck met Gwen and was blessed with many good years. So happy that you, Pat were able to come to the Amarantus
reunion. It was wonderful to see you! Please keep in touch.

Pat, those that we love we will never forget! I have such fond memories as a child of visiting my Aunt Ernie and the Kelly family in the Newport area. I really felt like we had been on a big adventure when we visited. We all wanted to move to your house. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Wishing you strength for today and hope for tomorrow.

Chuck is my uncle. He was always a wonderful presence in my life. He was interested in my successes and my failures and always had a good word to cheer me up. He is dearly loved by his family and we miss him so much.

Pat, your father was blessed to have you at his side! Wayne and I do not know
the rest of your family well but we know you and you have all of our sympathy.

I worked in the office of Creekside Village where Chuck and Gwen lived. Chuck was always so sweet and kind to everyone (staff and fellow residents). He had this huge, beautiful smile that he shared often with all of us. I will miss him and yet I am so grateful to have known this wonderful man. Julie G. (front office)
