So sad to hear Chuck passed away. I have many wonderful memories with Chuck. He captured our wedding 23 years ago this weekend. After our wedding I started working for Chuck. I learned so much from him over the the seven years I worked at Aspen. So grateful to him. My heart goes out to his family.

Chuck was a good friend, a brother in the lodge and truely a force of nature. His energy and enthusiasm seemed boundless. I enjoyed hanging around Chuck as a twenty year old and later as the old gang met for our reunions. Thanks to him we have some great group pictures to show for it. He never seemed to appear down even when his medical issues had taken a toll on him. I wonder if that was just his way of sparing us from the pain that he had been through. What a gracious gift. We both grew up in Virginia Beach as military dependents. I'll never forget the time when went to the Ratskellar at Little Creek one Summer night and if it weren't for Chuck I am quite sure I wouldn't have made it home safely. I know Chuck is in a better place now and picking up the spirits of all in contact with him. My condolences to his family for their loss, and my praise and admiration to Mary Rose for all she did for our old buddy Chuck.

Chuck was always a good friend for many years and a great Lodger. He truly enhanced my experience at UVA. I will miss him.

I was so sad to hear of Chuck's passing. Chuck hired me to shoot party pics at UVA and then hired me as a full time employee after college when I was wondering 'what now'? I learned great photography skills and good life lessons from working there that have carried me through life. Chuck always seemed to be smiling, even if you brought back the dreaded black roll (no pictures), he couldn't stay upset for long. I remember his generosity, patience, humor and love for his family. He also treated the Aspen photography staff like family. There were lots of crazy hectic photo days and lots of laughs. I'm convinced Chuck invented the selfie a decade earlier as all the college kids loved to get their photo with Chuck when he was out shooting the party. The world won't be the same without Chuck.

Chuck taught me that photos bring joy to people. Everywhere I go, I take photos. A light has gone from the world with Chuck's passing and it isn't just from a flash bulb. The world is a darker place without Chuck in it. He will always live in my heart. I am honored to be a small part of his legacy with every photo that I take. Sending warmest condolences to Kris and family. RIP CHL.

I would say, "Thanks for the memories, Chuck, and the photos that go along with them." I am grateful to have been able to work for Aspen Photography. It was certainly a fun job. Chuck taught me computer skills and photography techniques that I am still grateful for - even though sadly the technology has surpassed me a long time ago. I am grateful that Chuck and Catherine traveled to my wedding in the blizzard of '93 and captured many moments on film and video for us. One of our "Kodak moments" was me holding a snow shovel and a wedding bouquet. Before there were digital pictures Chuck would say, "one more, just in case". I'm thankful to have met his family including Charles, Elizabeth and his mom and brother Bob. I was able to visit Chuck and hear about his cancer surgery after I moved away from Charlottesville. I experienced traveling to UVa bowl games (with a Civil War tour on the side) and a Presidential inaugural ball as well as just living life with great Aspen employees. I pray for God to comfort Chuck's loved ones as you continue to experience the joys and struggles in this life.

I am so very sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. He gave me my first photography job and taught me how to treat a client as a friend. I had a 28 year career in photography all because of Chuck. He came into our sorority house and said, "I need a helper...who wants to be a helper?" I think I might have been one of the very first in 1984. He changed my life.
We just had our 30th UVA reunion and I brought my album of his photos. They brought back the most wonderful memories. His memory will live on in all of our hearts and the hundreds of thousands of images he captured for his clients.

Oh my goodness, I am so surprised and saddened to hear that Chuck Lane, the original inventor of "the Selfie" is gone.
WOW, that photo of Fayyadh and Catherine brings back memories! Like so many others have shared, he gave me my first job out of high school and taught me the ropes - from party pics on up to weddings, and everywhere in between. I drove all over the state for him! I worked in the office for a good while as well, and I will always remember the daily chaos - the dogs and the turtles, the doorbell and phone, the endless parade of wedding clients, hurried lunches of Tubby's subs and Little Caesars pizzas, rows of charging Quantums and stacks and stacks and stacks of photos...Chuck happily swirling around in all of it, messily dressed and drinking his foul coffee of dubious origin, with a huge smile on his face, greeting every new person like they were his oldest friend.
I remember Chuck for his gregariousness, his affability, his openness, his spiritedness, and his generosity. He loved his work, and he loved teaching so many to share it with him. I think I am lucky I was among them.
My deepest condolences to those who loved Chuck and are missing him today. I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Chuck from my next door neighbor Bob Lane and his wife Meena. We shared time together at Lane's Higginson Court home during Bob and Meena's wedding and numerous functions. Bob and Meena will miss his friendship and happiness.

Chuck....we miss you good buddy, but we know you've found a better place and eternal happiness!! Blessings to Charles and Elizabeth, and the rest of the family; and especially to MaryRose for taking care of Chuck in his final days. I found a couple of photos that bring a smile - one is of Lodgers of old and the other is of old Lodgers.
Yours in the bonds,

Chuck was a wonderful guy. I loved him. He had irrepressible humor, integrity, and strength in the face of such adversity. I wish that I had more contact with him.
Two anecdotes come to mind. The wonderful sight of Chuck being out on the ball field supporting his son who aspired to be a pro umpire.. Loved seeing them confer. Once Chuck cautioned\ a rowdy fan with one word "Sportsmanship". It was artistry. The other time was when he was at a neighborhood meeting. We ere getting no where due to a reluctant city official. Suddenly, Chuck held forth. "What are we here for anyway?" It turned things around for the better. A great example for getting to the point!
I loved you Chuck. I am sure that there are hundreds of similar examples
celebrating your great spirit. Jim Barns Charlottesville,Va.

I remember all too well the days of Aspen Photography when Chuck insisted I "get every last picture on a roll!" Those were good times and I owe my photography career to Chuck. Chuck, you will be missed.

Chuck gave me my first 'real job' - with many laughs, dogs, turtles, fish, late nights and self portraits along the way. He taught me photography as we went everywhere from fraternity parties in basements to high society weddings in Washington DC. When I was buying my first home and foolishly didn't realize that I needed cash to close the purchase he didn't hesitate to help me out of my pickle. One of many generous acts along his way. Thank you Chuck, you are missed.

Though Chuck and I lost touch after college, I have many fond memories of times together as our families shared good times in Virginia Beach: sharing a cabana at the Officer's Club Beach, Virginia Beach Cotillion (well, that was just the two of us!) and of course many Lane Christmas parties. I still have and even occassionally wear the Naval Academy anchor pin he gave me in our 13th summer. It will be a poignant reminder of a dear long time friend. May your spirit be at peace!

We all miss Chuck Lane terribly. He has asked that we remember him by attending a baseball game together to support his beloved Baltimore Orioles. I look forward to going to Camden Yards soon with family and friends. Meena and I have photographs of Uncle Chuck to share with you all. He would want us to remember him laughing and having fun. Chuck was always the life of the party, whether lighting off fireworks at Sandbridge, body surfing at the Cavalier, or taking photos at weddings. His enthusiasm and love of life were contagious. Growing up with Chuck was like something out of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. We even made a raft together. But I'll always remember him as a vigorous man in the prime of life, to be celebrated, appreciated, and treasured. He leaves a gap that will be terribly hard to fill. With all my Love, admiration, and respect, Bob
