NEW SHARON — Charles Lindhorst, 97 of New Sharon passed away Monday, March 30, 2009, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing Home in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 1, at 1:30 p.m. at the New Sharon United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Battern officiating. Visitation began at 12 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon with the family present from 5 to 7 Tuesday evening. Interment will follow at the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon with full military honors given by the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post No. 446. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Sharon United Methodist Church. Friends may sign the online guest book or give condolences at hardenfuneralhomes.com. Harden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Charles Homer Lindhorst, son of Homer and Nannie (Denman) Lindhorst was born on June 24, 1911, in Algona. He was a 1930 graduate of Algona High School and attended Iowa State University. After school he worked for Cowan Construction in Algona. A few years later he decided to start a construction business with his friend, Dolph Miller in Grinnell. On Oct. 17, 1943, Charles was united in marriage to Wilda Canine in New Sharon. He enlisted in the United States Navy as Carpenter's Mate First Class where he helped build landing strips. After Charles was honorably discharged in 1945, he went back to Grinnell and continued to work construction. Charles owned and operated the New Sharon Lumberyard for a number of years. Wilda passed away on Nov. 21, 1989. Charles married Geneva Brady in 1993. She later passed away. Charles continued to do construction jobs in the New Sharon area. Charles' passion was fishing and taking care of his apple trees in his backyard. He also enjoyed gardening, playing cards and visiting with people. Charles was a member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Prairie Homes, Prairie Knowles Country Club and the American Legion. He was also involved with the senior citizens meals.His memory is honored by his brother, Ralph (Lavon) Lindhorst, of Algona; his step daughter-in-law, Connie (Patrick) Brady, of Des Moines; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Dickinson, of Oskaloosa, and several cousins.Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Nannie Lindhorst and his two wives, Wilda Lindhorst and Geneva Lindhorst.  This obituary may be viewed at www.legacy.com
