Charles Mackintosh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 5 to Dec. 6, 2022.
Charles H. Mackintosh (Chuck) - 79, dedicated husband, father, nummy, firefighter, and friend passed away on November 26, 2022, at his home in Ridgeland, SC.

Chuck was born June 2, 1943, in Jersey City, NJ to the late Chuck and Ruth Mackintosh.

While attending Teaneck Junior High School, Chuck met the love of his life, Buddie (Hutcheon), and they married in June of 1963. Chuck always had a passion for helping others. In 1964, after two years of working for DPW, he joined the Teaneck Fire Department, where he would continue to serve the town for 41 years, earning the rank of Lieutenant. He retired from Teaneck in 2006.

In 1977, Buddie and Chuck moved to Waretown, NJ, and raised their three children, Eileen, Chuck, and Terry. Firefighting was his passion, but his love was and will always be his wife and children. It didn't matter that he worked 2 hours away and would spend 4 hours in a car driving, he would never miss a holiday or one of their sporting events, concerts, or plays.

In 1991, they moved to Galloway, NJ, and in 2005 he joined the Bayview Volunteer Fire Department. During his tenure with Bayview, Chuck served on numerous committees and loved going to the Galloway Townships schools and teaching the children about Fire Prevention. He served as a Lieutenant (2007,2008), Captain (2009), Assistant Chief (2010,2011,2020), and Chief (2012-2017). In 2014, Chuck was honored by the Atlantic County Fire Association with a 50-Year Plaque and Pin.

Chuck was known by many a name, Mack, Lieutenant, Chief, husband, and dad but what he loved to be called most was "Nummy". This is what his family and grandchildren (and many of their friends, who he loved like his own) called him. He loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Holidays were always the best when everyone was together and Nummy would give out his Hess Trucks to the boys and Gift Cards to the girls. It became a game, to see who would make Nummy cry (quiver lip) first with their gifts.

In 2020, Chuck and Buddie moved to Ridgeland, South Carolina, and enjoyed living in their new development and getting to know so many wonderful people that welcomed them into the neighborhood. He also enjoyed attending classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, where he became a regular, having attended over 114 classes in the short time he was here in SC.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years, Buddie; their 3 children Eileen (Tom) Kasunich, Chuck (Sharon) Mackintosh, Terry (Chuck) Reed; 9 grandchildren Tiffany (Cain) Myers, Tommy John (Jessica) Kasunich, Eric (Kelsey) Kasunich, Geo (Amanda) Garcia, Kirin, Kylie & Charlie Mackintosh, CJ (Emily Powell) Reed and Alison Reed: his 5 great-grandchildren, Rylee, Connor, Zoey, Chloe and Kinsley, his sister Sharon (Mike) Balcer, his brother William (Linda) Mackintosh, brother-in-laws "Two guys named Hutch" Hutcheon, his niece, nephews, and countless friends and loved ones.

Visitation will be held at the Bayview Firehouse (621 New Road, Galloway, NJ) on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm with a short service following where friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate Chuck's life in the way he would want to be remembered - as a loving, caring and dedicated man who enjoyed life. Repast will be held immediately after the service at the 6th Avenue Bayview Firehouse in Galloway.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chuck's memory to either the Bayview Firehouse, PO Box 546, Absecon, NJ, 08201, or the USCB Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, 1 University Blvd, Hargray 161, Bluffton, SC 29909.
