Charles Richard Moore
Charles R. "Charlie" Moore, age 86, died at home, May 8, 2021. Born in Benton, IL, May 31, 1934, he was the son of Charles and Ruth (Conover) Moore. An avid sportsman, naturalist, teacher, mentor, raconteur, individualist, noted decoy carver and painter, army veteran--and Cubs and Bud man—he inherited his father's love of the outdoors and his talent for painting waterfowl. Charles, an antiques enthusiast, operated a small antiques shop in DeKalb during the 1970s.
He served on the DeKalb Liquor Commission and was a long-standing participant in the Kane County Flea Market. He was also a member of the Midwest Decoy Collectors, Waterfowl USA, Ducks Unlimited, and the Boneyard Boccie Ball Club of Benton, IL.
Charles earned degrees from Southern Illinois University: the B.S. in Political Science and Education, 1956; the M.S. in Social Studies and Education, 1958; And the Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision, Social and
Philosophical Foundations, in 1971. He also did graduate work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and at Florida State University, Tallahassee. After teaching social studies and English at Cisne High School, Cisne, IL, from
1958–1960, he moved to DeKalb to coordinate team instruction and teach social studies and English at the Northern Illinois University Laboratory School from
1960 until it closed in 1970. He then continued to work in the College of Education at NIU where he taught secondary education courses for 40 years.
In 1981 he married Gretchen Wright Hanna in Carmel, CA, where they continued to vacation frequently, in addition to enjoying numerous road trips in the F-150.
Preceding him were his father, Charles, and his mother, Ruth Conover Williams.
Surviving are his wife, Gretchen, of DeKalb; son, Brian (Laura), and granddaughter and grandson of Glendale, AZ; his sister, Danny (Robert) Swanson, of Saratoga, CA; his nieces and nephews, and friends. He leaves a large footprint on the hearts and minds of many.
Arrangements were entrusted to: Finch Funeral Home, 310 Oak Street, DeKalb, IL 60115. Telephone: 815-758-3841. Interment of cremated remains has taken place in Oakwood Cemetery, DeKalb. At his request, there will be no visitation or service.

My sympathy for the loss of your loved one. Mr. Moore was a favorite teacher of mine when I was a Lab school student in the 1960's.
