Charles Robert Kershner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, 2023.
Colonel Charles Robert "Bob" Kershner, USAF, retired, went to Heaven on January 19, 2022. There, he is forever reunited with his loving wife of over 30 years, Kathy; his son, Charles Robert "Bob" Kershner II; his sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Ken Calvin; his parents, Chick and Floss Kershner and Kathryn Dormer and his many relatives and friends.

"Bob/Dad/Pop Pop" is lovingly revered by his friends and surviving family - brother Wayne, sisters Charlene and Denise (Mike); daughters Cheryl, Christa and Coeli; daughter-in-law Tammy; sons-in-law Jim and Tim; and grandchildren: Chuck, Hannah, and Zack (Bob/Tammy), Robbie and Bobbie (Cheryl), Brittni and Mikael (Christa/Jim), and Logan, Addison and Kieran (Coeli/Tim).

Bob graduated from Media High School where he was captain of the football team; subsequently he attended Philadelphia Military College.

He served 4 years in the the United States Navy and later transferred to the US Air Force's Pennsylvania Air National Guard 111th Tactical Air Support Group where he earned his officer's commission and graduated from USAF pilot training. His expert piloting skills, leadership, tenacity, motivation and hard work brought him to be the longest-standing Pa ANG Wing Commander for the 111th Fighter Wing. Colonel Bob Kershner, "Col K", served as Command Pilot in the C-97, OA-2, A-37, C-26 and A-10 Thunderbolt airframes. He led, mentored, supported and befriended thousands. Col K retired in 1995 with over 39 years of military service to the United States of America and the State of Pennsylvania.

Bob volunteered for and supported multiple charitable organizations and he served on his local Election and Zoning Boards. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Free Masons.

Of all of his achievements, his family was the one for which Bob was most proud. He spent some of his happiest moments surrounded with loved ones, friends and neighbors, hosting parties, cookouts and vacations in the Poconos. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving because it was all about the gathering. He loved to see his children and grandchildren and was thrilled to have more time with them once he retired. He once said his favorite words to hear were "Pop Pop!". Bob also loved traveling, woodworking, golfing and smoking the occasional cigar.

Bob/Dad/Pop Pop will be remembered first and foremost as a man who loved his family, but also as an unwavering servant, both to the United States of America and to all he encountered. He leaves the indelible mark of his enduring quality of service to all with honor, dignity, courage, strength, patriotism, fairness, perseverance, loyalty and love.

Donations may be made in his memory to St Jude Children's Research Hospital and/or Wounded Warrior Project.

Col., Bob Kershner was one of the finest men and leaders that I have known. His style was unique. His heart was always for the men and women of the unit. Unfortunately I never had the chance to talk to him after he retired, and thank him. I owed him my career and devotion. Fly High my friend
