Charles Rodman II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 14 to Apr. 23, 2023.
LaCrosse, WI? Charles Arthur Rodman II of LaCrosse, Wisconsin died on April 13, 2023 at home, attended by his family.

Born in Salt Lake City at LDS Hospital, 1936, to Ruth Gallacher and Charles Arthur Rodman I. He attended Murray High School and West High School.

He was a graduate of Yale University and the Medical College of Cornell University, New York City. He received postgraduate training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Following completion of his specialty training he was appointed to the position of Associate Consultant at Mayos. He was a diplomat of the Board of Neurologic Surgery.

In 1965-66 Charles served in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps and then as a volunteer physician in civilian hospitals in Saigon and Can Tho, Vietnam.

August 12, 1967, he was united in marriage to Lenore (Lee) Fredrickson of Syracuse, New York. They were blessed with two wonderful children: Ben Rodman (Jasmine Lok) of Lyons, CO; and Dan Rodman (Katie Ravich) of Madison, WI.

He was a staff surgeon at the Gunderson Clinic and a consulting neurosurgeon at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, WI from 1970 to 1982. In the late 1980's and 1990's he returned to a second career in emergency medicine which proved challenging and rewarding.

A founding member of the Wisconsin Neurological Society, a spokesperson for Physicians for Social Responsibility--speaking to over 150 groups on the dangers of reliance on nuclear weapons and the desirability of their elimination. As a member of Physicians for a National Health Program, he was a longtime supporter of universal healthcare.

Charles served on the board of the Hixon Forest Nature Center and as an advisor to the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association in Wisconsin.

Preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alberta. He is survived by his wife and sons; granddaughter, Sonia Rodman of Madison, WI; and three sisters: Miriam Arent of Danville, CA; Constance Theodore (Marcus) of Salt Lake City, and Diane Florez of Salt Lake City.

A few trophies from the "No Champs" Tribune Tennis Tournament early on spurred his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed birding, kayaking, biking and hiking. He traveled much of the world and spent summer vacations on Madeline Island, WI or at his mother's "Avenues" home in Salt Lake weeding and landscaping the corner lot. He was blessed with wonderful family, friends and colleagues...thanks to all of them for making his journey so special. In lieu of a memorial, donations may be made to The Salvation Army or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

A brother like no other.

One of my earliest neighborhood memories was being at being in the Rodmans' kitchen with Diane. The family sat around the table talking and laughing. Charles had such a low voice. I think even at that young age I had a crush on him.
Thank you, Rodman family for so many fond memories.

My first wife was one of Dr. Rodman's nurses in the OR. In 1973 on my 30th Birthday she collapsed at the end of her shift and it was soon discovered that she had a Astrocytoma Multiform that set the stage for a series of surgeries to extend her life to about 8-months. He did the best he could but it was not to be. In her last month with us, Dr. Rodman came to our home everyday to give Sharon whatever comfort that he could offer.
He was truly an Angel in disguise. I visited with him about 9-months ago when he told me about his own Multiform and I had a chance to again thank him and reassured him that I was looking forward to seeing him again on "the other side" which he completely understood. There is a special place in Heaven for this man. God Bless you Charlie, Your Friend always, Dean

In 1970 I was an orderly in the OR at Gunderson. Dr rondman was one of the physicians who invited me into his operating room and taught me a great deal and inspired me to go into healthcare. Because of his inspiration I am just about at my 50-year mark as a respiratory therapist and a respiratory educator. I've always shared fond memories of his understanding and kindness.
