Charles Russell Obituary

In Loving Memory of Charles "Pete" Russell

Charles "Pete" Russell, cherished husband, beloved family member, and revered friend, passed away serenely on April 27, 2024, at the age of 77 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born on March 29, 1947, in New York City, Pete was a man whose remarkable courage was evident early on, as evidenced by his valiant service as a medic in Vietnam, an act of bravery for which he was awarded the Silver Star.

After his honorable military service, Pete discovered his passion for craftsmanship, dedicating many years as a CAD software to design and engineer structural insulated panels of timber framing with Riverbend Timber Framing. Later in life, his compassionate nature led him to a career as a nursing assistant at the local VA hospital, where he delivered care with skill and kind-heartedness. Pete and Kim were caregivers to Kim's father, William A. Clugston for eight years in their home.

Pete is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Kimberly Clugston; his sister-in-law, Carol Russell, who enjoyed his delightful sense of humor; his nephew, Mark Russell (Sarah), and niece, Emily Russell, to whom he was both an entertaining storyteller and a playful sparring partner in wit. His fondness will also be deeply missed by his young nephews, Charlie and Emmett.

A long-standing and active member of the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Ann Arbor, Pete had an avid interest in a variety of hobbies, from collecting and displaying masks, coins, miniature books and Edward Curtis photography to enjoying an array of music. His home's front porch provided a place peaceful place for reflection as he watched the local wildlife perform their daily routines and visited with his many neighbors who would stop by for a chat and laugh.

The family cordially invites all whose lives were touched by Pete to a memorial service on Saturday, July 20, at 11 am, followed by a time of fellowship and reminiscence at a picnic lunch held at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation from 12-2 pm.

In honor of Pete's memory, and in place of floral tributes, contributions may be made to Heifer International, the National Audubon Society, or the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Ann Arbor-causes dear to his heart.

With great sorrow yet profound gratitude for his life and the joy he brought to others, we bid farewell to Charles Peter Russell. May his spirit find peace and continue to inspire all those he left behind.

I worked with Pete for almost 3 years at the Veterans Hospital, when I would come to work I was always glad to see him. I remember him as being a very serious ,thoughtful and caring person with the patients. I never got the impression from him that his work was just a job, I always felt that he was dedicated to it, and felt a real purpose in what he was doing. Quite often we would get into political discussions and although we were at opposite ends of the political spectrum it was always fun to spar with him, and he always got the best of me.
