Memorial services to celebrate the life of Charles E. Selby, 77, of Davenport, will be 11:00a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home 614 Main Street, Davenport. Visitation will be Monday, from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Honoring his wish cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, Arsenal. Chuck, passed away on September 2, 2010 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Charles Edward Selby, 77 a resident of Davenport, Iowa, departed this life at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, on September 2, 2010. Visitation will be Monday, September 6, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport. Memorial services will be Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Honoring his wish cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
Charles was born August 15, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Raymond Cope and Edith (Andre’) Selby, Sr. Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He married Carol Jean Gibson on November 24, 1956. He later married Judith Yadon.
Chuck graduated from Emerson High School, Gary, Indiana. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1960 (U.N.I.) Cedar Falls, IA. He had been a physical education teacher, coach and referee. His first teaching job was at South Hamilton Community School District, Stanhope, IA. He then taught for the Sibley Public Schools, Sibley, IA. In 1964 he moved his family to Davenport where he taught elementary physical education for 26 years at Garfield Elementary, retiring in 1990.
Charles had a love for baseball! While in high school, one of his proudest accomplishments was pitching his first no hitter game for Emerson High, on May 14, 1951, winning 4-0 against Hammond Tech. Following high school, the Chicago White Sox recruited him to pitch for the farm team, Sky Sox. He also played semi pro ball for the Waterloo White Hawks.
Memorials may be made to either the American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association. Chuck's family will gather at Bleyarts Tap, 2210 E. 11th St., Village of East Davenport after the burial on Tuesday.
Survivors include his children, Debbie Eitel, Davenport, Bill Selby, Lawrenceville, GA and Leanne (Darryl) Buchholz, Davenport; his grandchildren David Eitel, Davenport, Danielle (Chad) Walters, Urbandale, IA, Mitchell Buchholz, Coralville, IA and Kyle Buchholz, Davenport, and his great grandchildren Desiree Eitel, Daniel Eitel, Selena Vasquez-Eitel and Kimberly Vasquez-Eitel all of Davenport, his first wife Carol Selby, as well as nieces, nephews and his beloved dog, Gabe.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his sister Kathryn Steinforth, his brother Raymond “Bud� Selby, Jr. and his first grandchild, “Richie� Edward Eitel
