Charles Smith Obituary

Published by The Press-Enterprise from Apr. 21 to Apr. 22, 2012.
CHARLES WILLIAM SMITH Charles William Smith, age 96, peacefully passed away to be with the Lord on April 4, 2012, in Hemet, California. Born January 28, 1916 in Cherokee County, Kansas, he raised wheat and cattle in Nebraska. Joining the Army in World War II, he served as a Master Sergeant in the Army Finance Corps and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He then moved to California where he was a longtime resident of Fort Bragg and Northridge. Well-respected, he worked as a Financial Officer for Bank of America for over 30 years and then started a second career as a successful real estate broker in the San Fernando Valley. Born with a strong work ethic, he was a role model for all who knew him. Charles was known as a man of his word, whose handshake sealed the deal. Truly, he was a member of "The Greatest Generation." Very active in church, Charles, along his wife Terry, built and began the congregation of St. Charles, King and Martyr Episcopal Church in Northridge. He also enjoyed community service and was known for his civic and charitable contributions. He was a past president of the American Legion, Exchange, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist, and Rotary Clubs. On weekends he enjoyed dancing, and woodworking; particularly creating wooden gavels for service clubs. Charles was also very active in the political arena. At age 93, the Republican Party sent him to Henderson, NV to canvass neighborhoods door-to-door in 113 degree weather. Charles had an enthusiasm for early California history and was a good storyteller sharing military, high school football, hunting, and other life experiences. His family describes him as creative, ethical and generous. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Virginia "Terry" Smith. Charles was a man of integrity, peace and humor who had a positive impact on our lives and we cherish many fond memories of him. We take comfort that he has now returned to the loving arms of his wife. Surviving are his son Gregory Smith (Terry) of Sun City West, AZ; his daughter Valerie Eitzen (Ron) of Hemet; his siblings, Frank J. Smith, Jr., of Irwindale, CA and Virginia Anderson of Petaluma, CA; grandchildren Christopher Shaffer (Heather) of Mira Loma, Cari MacDonald (John) of Hemet, Amy Follick (Todd) of Hemet, CA, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service with honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 16th at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel, located at 1501 W. Florida Ave., Hemet, California 92543 with Reverend Dr. John Henke presiding. Reception will follow in the Ramona Room. Private Inurnment will be in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA, where he will be laid to rest with his wife, Terry, together forever.
