Charles Stephens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 19, 2025.
Charles Willard Stephens, commonly known as Jack or "Jackson," passed away on December 11, 2024, in Bellingham, Washington, at the age of 79. Born on April 28, 1945, in Spokane, Washington, Jack lived a life marked by creativity, resilience, and an unshakable connection to the divine.

Jack grew up in Washington and attended Odessa High School, where his vibrant spirit and imagination were already evident. He played football and tennis and brought joy to his classmates as the self-created Tiger Mascot-a role that showcased both his humor and originality. He continued his education at Wenatchee Valley College before graduating from Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

From a young age, Jack was recognized as a born artist-creative and eccentric in the most captivating ways. Everything he touched became a canvas for his imagination. Painting was his most celebrated talent; Jackson had an uncanny ability to look at any scene or person and instantly envision how to make it more beautiful. His artwork lives on in the homes of those fortunate enough to have received one of his many pieces-each one a testament to his unique vision and expressive soul.

Jack's life was not without challenges. Diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, he navigated a world that often misunderstood him. Yet those labels could never fully capture who he was. To those who knew him-whether through friendship or through his art-he was funny, witty, kind-hearted, and deeply spiritual. He never ate a meal without offering a prayer and maintained an ongoing dialogue with God throughout his life.

His journey took him across the country-from New York to San Francisco, Portland to Seattle-and ultimately back to Washington in Bellingham. Whether homeless or institutionalized, Jack carried himself with dignity and panache. His size made him physically imposing; his humor made him unforgettable; but it was his kindness and faith that truly defined him.

Jack is lovingly remembered by his younger sister Patricia Stephens-who became his guardian many years ago-and her son David Voye. He is also survived by nieces Rachel Stephens and Syringa Hochhalter, daughters of Jack's late brother Jim Stephens.

He was preceded in death by his mother Tallulah Walter; stepfather Ben Walter; father James Morgan Stephens; and brother Jim Stephens.

For those who wish to honor Jack's memory or share stories of their time with him, Patricia will be present at Odessa Cemetery (Row 27, Lot 48) on Wednesday, September 17th at 5:00 p.m., where Jackson is laid to rest.

May the memory of Charles Willard "Jack" Stephens bring comfort to all who knew him-and may his art continue to speak for the beautiful soul behind it.
