Charles STEWART QC Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Dec. 17 to Dec. 19, 2012.
STEWART QC, Charles R. (Charlie)
January 25, 1950 - December 14, 2012
Charlie Stewart beloved husband of Christine of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the age of 62 years. With sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Charlie after a year and a half courageous battle with cancer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Charlie came to Calgary to settle in the 'new' community of Meadowlark Park. After a childhood and adolescence filled with mischievous fun, Charlie attended the University of Alberta, graduating in 1975 with a law degree. He proceeded to London, England, earning a Masters of Law from the London School of Economics. During this time and for many years after, Charlie's sense of adventure saw him explore countries far and wide, including Ecuador, Kenya, Nicaragua, and most of Europe. He was a natural athlete; skier, mountain climber, and cyclist. Despite the nickname 'Vacation Stewart', amusingly conferred upon him by several justices, Charlie was passionate about his career as a criminal defense lawyer. He was the ultimate barrister taking on unpopular causes in the fight for justice. He was diligent, hard- working and all of his clients knew it and felt confident with Charlie as their counsel. He was a force in the court room and commanded the respect of all other parties and the judiciary. He always maintained excellent relationships not only with opposing counsel, but with the police, investigators and witnesses. Charlie was a mentor to many young lawyers and a teacher to police agencies. Charlie was devoted to his family. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Christine, daughters Emilie and Brigitte, sister Elaine (Cal) Todd, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Sazie (Ken Brown), mother-in-law, Marie Sazie and nephews Timothy, Nathaniel and William. Charlie is predeceased by his mother Isabel, father Crawford and father-in-law Jack Sazie. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers and because of Charlie's love for western art and the beauty of Southern Alberta, donations may be forwarded to the Leighton Art Centre at www.leightoncentre.org and click on the 'support' link or mail to Leighton Centre, Box 9 Site 31, RR 8 Calgary, AB T2J 2T9. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Agape Hospice for the compassionate care given to Charlie. In living memory of Charlie Stewart, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Charlie you will be greatly missed. You saved some of us from pain and suffering and sought out judgements that wouldn't prolong injustices in this earthly world. You served your time your sentenced served. You have been set free.

A while back I won an appeal for a client who then hired Charlie for his new trial. After getting an acquittal, Charlie made a point of tracking me down to tell me about what happened in court...which made me feel good about the work I had done. That is how I will remember Charlie...a genuinely nice guy.

Charlie could always make me laugh - even when he was on his death bed at the Hospice. I have so many memories of the big guy. He loved tearing down the ski hill, cappuccinos, fine wine, good looking women. He was so proud of his daughters & wife Christine. Charlie fought the good fight, the battles that could be won. Charlie taught me much about life & goodness - he was a mentor, a teacher & above all a friend. I will miss him so very much. Rest in peace.

To Christine and family,
As a police officer over 25 years, I have met numerous defence lawyers. One of the few I held in high regard was Charlie. He was a very intelligent and respectful man. While at times adversaries in court or at times passing in the halls, Charlie was very approachable, friendly and sincere. He was a man that exemplified what a lawyer should be, I will miss him.

my sincere condolences to charlies family, he was so proud of you. How I enjoy the memories of Charlie and Alain in courtroom 7, articling students and so excited about the future. Many laughs, many spirited disagreements, many, many fond memories. What a joy to watch Charlies personal and professional successes and to be able to call him a friend. Above all and always he was a good person, kind and decent. Rest in peace Charlie. doris

Charlie will be dearly missed by the McKeating family. We feel extremely fortunate to have had Charlie in our lives. His love of family, passion for his career, quick wit and sense of humour will be in our memories forever. We are especially thankful to Charlie for the wonderful relationship that he developed with our children. It is impossible for Charlie's joy of life and always enquiring mind not to pass on to those fortunate to have been in his life and for that (and much more) we are grateful.

I was Charlie's grade 6 teacher at Milton Williams. He was a bright light and possessed a droll sense of humour. A student not to be forgotten. His Mom was very supportive of his teachers. I met up with him a few times, by chance,in subsequent years and we enjoyed getting reacquainted. Charlie revelled in playing the 'devil's advocate' even tho' he privately favoured the opposite side. I feel very sad that he has gone; I will light a candle and say a prayer for his family. Blessings............
