Charles Edward White MARION, Va. Charles Edward White, age 74, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mr. White was born in Smyth County to the late Ralph "Blackie" White and Jessie Margaret White, and was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Destiny Faith Taylor. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having joined at the age of 16. He served in the Korean conflict and was the recieptant of several medals of valor including the purple heart. Charlie had worked with the Virginia Department of Corrections Work Release Program in Caroline County, Va., and attended MCV College in Richmond. Mr. White was a retired deputy from the Smyth County Sheriffs Department where he was the firearms instructor. Charlie was a 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of the William King Lodge No. 227 AF & AM in Saltville, the Chilhowie Masonic Lodge No. 250 AF & AM and the Glade Spring Lodge No. 236 AF & AM. Charlie had served as the worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 151 in Saltville and was past District Deputy. Survivors include: wife, Millie Brooks White; one daughter, Missy Reese, Aiken, S.C.; one grandson, Reese Boatwright; one brother, Billy Earl Hudgins; nephews, Harvey Ray Hudgins, James Tolliver, Richard Tolliver, Steven Tolliver; mother-in-law, Edith Brooks; sister-in-law, Juanita Tolliver; special friends, Gwyn Eddy, Peggy and Tom Eddy and Joan and Marvin Taylor. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at the Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Masonic rites will be rendered. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Round Hill Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charlie's memory can be made to the Shriner's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com Bradley's Funeral Home is serving the White family.

Mildred I never met Charles but knew his father Ralph. Charles grandfather Stanley White was my mothers brother and I visited his home many times. I try to keep up with my mother's family. Sorry about the loss of Charles.

I was shocked to hear about Charlie. I am so sorry. If there is ANYTHING we can do, please let us know. I'll miss him terribly and loved him dearly! I'll never forget him calling me "his girl"!
