Charles Winterhalter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2008.
DARTMOUTH — Charles E. Winterhalter, 44, of Dartmouth, left us to be with the Lord in Peace on Dec. 29, 2008, after a long, heroic struggle with cancer.

Charlie was born in New York, graduated from Dartmouth High School followed by Stonehill College in 1986, and has resided in Dartmouth for the last 34 years. He has touched the lives of so many and will be desperately missed by all.

Charlie was a true community leader having been deeply involved in numerous charities including the Schwartz Center for Children and the Ronald McDonald House Charities. He made us so proud being the President of the Eastern New England Ronald McDonald House Charities organization. Charlie's lifelong career was as a McDonald's owner/operator in New Bedford and Dartmouth.

Charlie was passionate about many activities including playing, watching and attending sporting events, especially the Boston Celtics, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He loved to get together with his friends, go on vacation with his family and particularly enjoyed New York City. He had a great enthusiasm for coaching his sons' baseball and basketball teams. He will be remembered by his friends and family for his perseverance, determination, enthusiasm and passion for life.

He is survived by his wife, Desiree and their three boys, Mitchel, Evan and Max; his parents, Joseph P. and Geraldine Winterhalter of Dartmouth; his brothers and sisters, Donna Rossomondo of New York, Joseph Winterhalter of Dartmouth, Eileen Waxler of Dartmouth, Maureen Winterhalter of Connecticut, John Winterhalter of Dartmouth, and Geri Sullivan of Dartmouth. His large family includes 24 nieces and nephews, along with his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Antonio and Judith Fernandes and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in law.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 1-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, Charlie and Desiree would appreciate donations being made to the RMHC of Eastern New England, 3 Industrial Drive #6, Windham, NH 03087.

It was shocking to learn today of Charlie's passing. I worked with Charlie in the 80's in the Downtown N.B. store. It his hard to fathom that such a dynamic vivacious person is gone. My warmest regards to his family and friends. He was a good man.

I was shocked by the passing of Charlie. I was friends with his brother john back in the Merrymount neighborhood when we used to paly football on the street in front of his house. It was a fun time and I will always remember charlie's great drive and competative spirit back in the days when we were all innocent kids who could walk around with no fear. Charlie: I know you will be missed but so many accomplishments your family is stronger because you were here on earth with us. God Bless you and your family.

Gerri and The Winterhalter Family;

I am sooo sorry to hear of your loss. Charlie was really funny and good with my son the year he was his basketball coach. Cody needed a little more push than the others and Charlie was right there for him. I hope God can guide you thru this difficult time in your life and in the future. My sincere condolences.

To the entire Winterhalter & Fernandes families: Desiree, Mitchel, Evan & Max

There are no words adequate to impart our sorrow. Charlie was such a loving soul, a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend. His passion in life focused on his genuine love of family and friends. Everyone who knew Charlie is blessed with a personal slideshow of many wonderful memories. For that we are forever grateful. Life is so very precious and fragile. The thought of Charlie’s death is so incredibly difficult to bear, due in part, to the separation of sharing life experiences. In these moments, may we rely upon the treasure of our memories and our faith in God. May the words of Jesus bring us comfort: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with me, so that you may also be where I am." Charlie’s faith was unwavering. He believed these words and would expect no less from each of us.

There is also a quote that I hope brings you comfort by Alfred Lord Tennyson: It states: "I am part of all that I have met." These words are so true, for we are all blessed to carry a part of Charlie within us. His passing will never be forgotten. We have been given a gift as well as an opportunity to share in his exchange of love and friendship. We can pay tribute to this bond by keeping his spirit alive within us.

Desiree, you are & always will be an angel on this earth. Your unwavering faith, inner strength and peace, continue to inspire us all. Mitchel, Evan & Max, your father loves each of you & your Mom more than life itself. Never forget that he will always be there to guide you life.

In closing, I’d like to share a beautiful prayer with you. I promise to dedicate it each day, in homage of Charlie's soul. Jesus shared this prayer with St. Gertrude, noting that each time it is said, 1,000 souls will be released from purgatory. Let us offer this prayer for Charlie’s soul: "Eternal Father, we offer thee the most precious blood of thy divine son Jesus. In union with the masses said, throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and in my own family; in dedication for Charlie’s soul. Amen.

Love & Prayers,

I wish I could be there today to say good-bye to Charlie, and to give you a hug, but I could not arrange to get there in time. Although time and distance have kept our families apart, you, Charlie and your boys have always had a special place in my heart. Charlie was one of a kind, and the two of you together were perfect. I was so happy to see that none of that had changed when I last saw you. Please know that you are in my constant thoughts and prayers. Much Love, Doreen

It has been 26 years since we met at Forsyth Des. Unfortunately, over the years, the physical miles have kept us apart. That only made me cherish the times we were together more. The love you and Charlie had for each other was so obvious to all around you. I remember how you could make him smile (oh that smile of his) just by climbing up in an apple tree and the pleasure it gave him to throw you a 4oth surprise bash in NYC. I am so sad for you and the boys yet I am so happy for what you all had with Charlie. Some people don't get that in a lifetime. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this time. Dear Mrs. Winterhalter, Mitchel, Evan and Max,

I am so distraught over the loss of Charlie, a man that inspired me so much with strength and conviction. He was such a positive influence to me in dealing with my diagnosis of prostate cancer. I prayed for your husband everyday and asked the Lord daily to bestow upon him His healing touch. Your family has always been so special to me in all the years that I served you as your children's principal. Boys you are so lucky to have had a father who loved you so much. He would always tell me how proud he was to have you. Boys you brought so much joy to his life. Your father was my hero. I will never forget Charlie. May our Lord prepare a beautiful place for him in His paradise and may his spirit live in all us. Mrs. Winterhalter, you were a gentle, loving, supportive wife and I admire you for how strong you were through all this time. Please accept my sympathy. I wish I could have been there for his final farewell. Know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and the boys.

All my love,
