Charles Wiseman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2019.
July 23, 1935 - February 2, 2019
Charles Rogers Wiseman was born on July 23, 1935, to Blanch and Ed Wiseman. He spent his younger years on the family ranch and went to a rural two-room school. He then transferred to public schools in San Antonio to prepare him for college. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1953. That fall, he entered Texas A&M University, where he received a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1959. Prior to graduating, he married Patricia Padgett. They have been married for 60 years and had two children, Charles Vincent and Polly. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia and their son, Charles Vincent, and his three children, Savannah, Marsy, and James Rogers, and by his granddaughter, Amanda Taylor "AT", and son-in-law, David Bruce Franklin. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann "Tootie" Simpson, and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Polly Wiseman Franklin and his parents Ed and Blanche Wiseman.

Charlie opened the Wiseman Animal Hospital in San Antonio in September 1959, where he practiced veterinary medicine for 37 years. He was an avid skeet shooter and hunter and travelled all over the world with his wife Pat. Charlie was President of the Bexar County Veterinary Medical Society, President of the San Antonio Gun Club, President of San Antonio A&M Club and President of the 12th Man Foundation at Texas A&M. In 2003, he was inducted into the A&M Letterman's Association Hall of Honor and in 2007 he was named an Outstanding Alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a devoted Aggie, and in 2014 he received A&M's highest distinction among former students when he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by the Association of Former Students. He endowed an athletic scholarship and later a scholarship to the College of Veterinary Medicine at A&M in memory of his mother, Blanche, and also endowed a Chair in Cardiology. Charlie and his family endowed a Presidential Scholarship in memory of his daughter, Polly.

Growing up, I cannot think of anyone more influential outside of my family and teachers... Dr. Wiseman taught me so much as we welcomed our pets... I never thought of "the vet"... I always thought of Dr. Wiseman. Whether he realized it or not, he was a huge part of our family, and whatever he said was respected and integrated into our family routine. As the years have passed, and as we have looked at pictures of our family with those two wonderful dogs, there isn't a moment when someone doesn't mention Dr. Wiseman and a story or two. I am sure that I write for many families whose lives were touched by this caring man. Well done, good and faithful servant. Thank you.

A man who exemplified gentleness, graciousness, generosity, and genuineness. Was a true pleasure to know him from A&M events. Was so appreciative of him helping us with the Hyatt Hill Country for the MSC Abbott Family Leadership Conference.

Charlie's dad and my great grandfather, Oscar Wood, knew each other well. Had some great times talking about their days "out in the country." Was great to walk down the hallway of history at the Hyatt as he reminisced about those times.

Blessings, peace, comfort, and strength to all of you. -Cliff Dugosh '86
