Cheryl Cornell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2015.
On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, Cheryl Ann Cornell, passed away unexpectedly in her home. She was 60 years young.

Cheryl was born January 16, 1955 in Yakima, Washington to Geraldine and Fredrick Schilling. She was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. When Cheryl was young, her family marched out West to start a dairy. The twice daily milking of cows, feeding the other farm animals, and other dairy chores occupied much of Cheryl's time. All of their hard work paid off and their dairy was recognized as Darigold's "Farm of the Year." She was also active in 4H, showing her beloved cows and horses. She attended both Holy Family and St. Joseph's Elementary Schools before attending Carroll High School.

After graduating from Carroll High School, she began her career in nursing as a nursing student at Yakima Valley College and the University of Washington. Upon completion, she began work as the youngest Emergency Room nurse at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, now Regional. When not at work, Cheryl participated in a St. Joe's youth ministry program called SEARCH. Even though Cheryl wasn't looking, it was through this program that she met her future husband, John. On Labor Day, 1979, John and Cheryl were married in St. Joseph's Church by a longtime family friend, Father Neill Meany, SJ. They settled in Toppenish to be close to John's work.

After attending the University of California, Los Angeles, she received her nurse practitioner credentials in 1982. Her first job as a nurse practitioner took her to the Lower Valley where she was affiliated with the United States Commissioned Core Indian Health Services staffing their MCH and OB/GYN clinic. The Yakima County Health District is where Cheryl went next where she dealt with communicable diseases, maternal/child health, and obstetrics and gynecology. In 1986, John and Cheryl welcomed their first daughter, Anna, into the world. 1989 was a big year for Cheryl; she not only made the leap into private practice with Dr. Kevin Harrington as one of the first female gynecologists in the area, but also gave birth to her second daughter, Emily. It was also that year John and Cheryl completed the study for and celebrated John's ordination as a permanent deacon and moved to Yakima.

Always one to give back, she served on a number of local child care agency advisory committees and also donated her time to help with local sports physicals. With the girls growing up, she helped out in any way she could. From working at the Fischer scone booth at the Fair to morphing into "Stitches," Camp Roganunda's finest and most overqualified camp nurse, she loved watching them grow. There was also Sunday School, Campfire, school sports... Cheryl was always busy; even while resting in the evenings, she would be stitching a quilt or planning a project for the yard. Cheryl was so much to so many: a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, nurse, confidant, mother, wife, sister, best friend, and a lover of animals and flowers. She had a life-long love of the good, the beautiful, and the truth.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, John, daughters Emily Cornell, an elementary teacher at St. Cecilia's in the Seattle area, and Lt. Anna Cornell, US Navy; sisters Dianne St. Mary (Ray) of Yakima, and Mary Sims (Tracy) of Indianapolis, IN; her nieces Nicole Franson (Michael) of Seattle and Victoria Sims of Indianapolis, IN; nephews Patrick St. Mary and daughter Madeline of Seattle, and Ian Schilling of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Schilling, mother, Geraldine Schilling, and brothers Fred III and Frank Schilling.

A Rosary will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. To share a memory of Cheryl, please visit www.lepfuneralhome.com.

How could I have missed this announcement? I first met Cheryl when she worked for the Health District, I served as an interpreter for one of her clients and she was so attentive and caring to that individual I started seeing her as a patient myself. That was over 30 years ago and I have never encountered a health care professional since then with the same caring attitude. Cheryl I am sure you will be missed by many, self included and I know in my heart you are in a special place. Rest in peace, you have certainly earned that.

She was a wonderful nurse. So kind and caring. She immediately put me at ease the first time I met her. I can't believe she's really gone. Rest in peace, Cheryl, and thank you for your kindness and care.

Having known Cheryl from working with her as another nurse at the Health District, she was an amazing lady that everyone loved. She was kind and gentle with a great sense of humor. She had a way with patients...no matter what they were going through, she could put them at their ease, while letting them know that someone was looking out for their wellbeing.

I will miss my conversations with Cheryl. In her office, she would listen intently as I talked about appointment. She was very personable and would also share her ideas, family, and experiences. I didn't see her a lot; but, that meant something to me. I will miss her sweet smile. What a gift it was to be able to know her if only a short time. I pray God will fill the sadness in your hearts with special memories that will make you smile.

Cheryl will be deeply missed! She always greeted me with a smile. I will always remember her. I cannot believe I will not see her again at Generations. She always treated me like we have known each other for years. She made me feel so welcomed on my first visit to Dr. Harrington's office. She gave me a hug and told me everything was going to be ok.

For so many years Cheryl greeted me with her beautiful smile as we walked back to her office to visit and talk about our families, our lives, and yes even the purpose of the visit. I know she truly cared about me as a person not just a patient. She will be greatly missed. Prayers for her family as you walk through this difficult time.

I came home this evening and called each of my kids and let them know how much I love them. Cheryl was such a Special person in so many ways. She was my doctor for many years until I moved away to Bend, Or. I have never been able to find another doctor that was so caring. I had just made up my mind to call her again and and return to her as a patient. My prayers to her husband and 2 daughters during this very difficult time. She will be greatly missed.

Cheryl was a good friend. She wasn't just my health care provider, she was a confidant, she was a great listener and she gave the biggest, best hugs I've ever had. Cheryl always made me feel like I mattered and if I had a problem that she couldn't help with, she suggested avenues of resources which in itself was a huge help.
From the first time we met, Cheryl and I hit it off. Our daughters were the same age and doing a lot of the same things in school. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her love of her family was huge. She was so proud of her girls. Always.
I, like most everyone who knew her, will miss Cheryl terribly.
And Cheryl, I did what you suggested and things are better now. I wanted to tell you that and I waited to long. I'll miss you, my friend. Make some beautiful quilts in heaven. Paula

Cheryl was such a warm, caring person. I appreciated her friendship as one of her many patients. She gave me such comfort during some hard times, that I will always hold her in high esteem. Plus, she was good at gently nagging me when we ran into each other at the grocery store, to not neglect checkups.
My sincere condolences to Cheryl's family. She always was so proud of her daughters. She will be missed by many.

Oh Cheryl. I am struggling to wrap my head around this...my heart breaks knowing I won't see you again in this life. How can I express what you meant to me in just a few sentences? I will miss your counsel, your hugs, your hearty laugh (oh how we laughed!), and how during the few precious hours I spent with you every year you LISTENED and made me feel like I was THE most important person in your life in those moments. Along with countless other women in our community I mourn--but know that God had much bigger plans for you. You were one of a kind, larger than life, and your passing leaves an immeasurable void. May God bless and comfort your family during this difficult time. Rest in eternal peace beautiful lady.

John, to you and the girls I especially give assurance of continued prayers.

There was a pang in my heart when I saw the paper... My deepest condolences to all who have lost this wonderful and beautiful woman from their lives.
I was only a patient once, but that one visit changed my life forever. She listened and heard what I was not saying. She spoke and told me what I needed to hear. She had compassion, kindness and understanding in her eyes when she gently talked me into trying something new...just for a month or so..to see if it helped. She treated me as a long-time friend when she gave me a hug before I left. And when I left...I didn't feel as alone, lost or as helpless as when I went in.
She helped me turn my life...myself, into something better. It was only one visit with someone I didn't know. And I owe a lifetime of thanks to this incredible lady and her easy smile.
Cheryl, I am very grateful that you and your heart were here and that I got to be in the same space you were in for a moment.

Cheryl was "just" my doctor but she always treated me like I was a friend. She always gave me a smile and a hug upon arriving and leaving, and she would remember anything that was going on in my family and ask for an update. I am truly going to miss this wonderful woman, and I will keep her family in my prayers.

I write this with a sad heart for all who knew Dr. Cheryl especially her family and co-workers. Cheryl always greeted me with a friendly smile and warm hug. I've never met her family, but knew how much she loved them. We had several discussions regarding her family and mine. Heaven has gained a very caring Angel!! Rest in peace Cheryl you will definitely be missed.

John and family, although I actually knew you longer it didn't seem that way. I loved Cheryl's bright smile and wave when we'd run into each other at Antojitos. She was one of the most exception people I've ever met. We are all so much better for having known her. May the loving memories wrap themselves around your family.

To John, Anna and Emily--It was such a joy to be your next-door neighbor for several years. Cheryl and I had such fun talking over the gate about our yards and she was always willing to show me a new plant or share advice. Not only was she a neighbor and friend but my healthcare provider for many years. Please know our prayers go with you and I know God's garden will be so much improved because of Cheryl's presence. To Cheryl's family, I am truly saddened by your loss. Cheryl was such a loving and caring person with her ever-present smile. Having known each other since third grade, she always greeted me using my maiden name, "Hey Rullman! How ya doin'?", followed by a big hug. I will always cherish our friendship. She had a special relationship with Our Lord. She is with him now.

Cheryl has been been taking care of me for over 23 years...I am saddened by her loss. She always took time to sit down with you and have a conversation about not only your health but your life...always eager to share a laugh or details about her own children or her marriage. When I lost my husband she was so sweet. The world lost an amazing person and I will continue to pray for her family and friends.

Cheryl was amazing when it came to patient care. When my husband and I were dealing with infertility issues, she was a shoulder to cry on and was so supportive. When we became pregnant with our little miracle baby, she called us personally to congratulate us (much to her shock and disbelief!). Her love and support will never be forgotten.

So so sorry for your loss. Our family became friends with the Schilling family through 4-H, participation at Central Wa State Fair, and anything that had to do with cattle/dairy! I remember always being able to stop by and have a fresh glass of milk and talk for a while. When Cheryl came back into my life through Dr. Harrington, it was like there was never a day lost. We were long lost friends. I loved her so much for all of the support she gave me during my cancer illness. She will be missed tremendously.....Sherry Altena Gosseen & Family
