Cheryl Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2024.
Cheryl Lee Thornton-Stewart was born March 29, 1964, in Staten Island, New York and passed away on August 1, 2024, at the age of 60 in Union Beach, New Jersey. A beloved figure in her community, Cheryl's life was marked by her indomitable spirit and unwavering concern for others, even during her challenging battle with cancer.

Cheryl attended Middletown North High School and went on to make her mark professionally as a manager at Aramark at both Monmouth University and Rutgers University-Newark, as well as manager at Ader's Tavern in Union Beach. Her career was characterized by a compassionate leadership style and a dedication to her team, which she considered a second family.

Beyond her professional life, Cheryl was devoted to her family and friends. She found joy in spending time with loved ones, taking trips to Atlantic City, playing Candy Crush, and sharing stories about her children, whom she adored immensely. Her resilience and ability to maintain a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity, inspired all who knew her.

Cheryl is survived by her children, Justine Marie Shuey and Robert Stewart Jr.; ex-husband, Robert Stewart Sr.; siblings, Patricia and Richard Juliano, James and Lynne Thornton, Karen DelRe-Schmalz and Paul Schmalz, Kevin and Kerry Thornton; many loving nieces and nephews and their children; as well as many friends and acquaintances. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lois and James Thornton.

A Celebration of Life will be held at VFW Post 2179, 1 Veterans Lane, Port Monmouth, NJ 07758, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM on Sunday, August 4, followed by a tribute to Cheryl's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Breast Intentions, P.O. Box 926, Middletown, NJ 07748, an organization close to Cheryl's heart who supported her during her cancer treatment.

Cheryl's legacy of love, kindness, and community will continue to influence and inspire. She will forever be remembered as a guardian angel to her family and friends and a testament to a life beautifully lived.

My boyfriend Will and I would see Cheryl from time to time at Ader´s...we loved the steak and eggs and he loved her Bloody Mary´s. She would see me there playing candy crush and always ask me what level I was on. Soon we became friends on Facebook. Unfortunately I too was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and we were fighting it together. She would always text me first to see HOW I WAS DOING. Putting her feelings aside going through the same damn thing. I would always say to her, don´t worry about me, how are YOU doing? I love this woman for always proud and never putting herself first. Even in the hardest times. RIP CHERYL we love and miss you.

I never met Cheryl but I've become good friends with her sweet sister Karen for many years. I am deeply saddened today to learn she has gone on to be with Jesus. My prayers began long ago and will continue for the family and friends. So deeply sorry

I got to give Cheryl a big hug the last time I saw her. She was such a lovely good spirited human. That´s what I will remember.
