The following is an editorial printed in the Sun Chronicle on Dec 16, 1994 - My family and I appreciate the tribute to our Dad.

"When the prescription was hot chocolate..."

One-stop shopping is hardly a new idea. Why, 50 years ago you might have dropped off a prescription at a downtown Attleboro drug store and in the same trip picked up film to capture Christmas memories with your Brownie box camera, Yardley cosmetics for Mom and a box of grandma`s favorite chocolates. A heated nut dispenser in the corner had just the thing for an uncle fond of cashews. And if it was cold outside, you could brace yourself with a cup of hot chocolate-- topped with a squirt of whipped cream-- at the soda fountain.

While it was sad news to read last week of the death of Chester Ashley of Norton at age 91, it rekindled memories of the pharmacy/emporium he operated for so many years. Ashley`s Drug Store was a useful and cheerful place.

Mr Ashley was barely more than a boy when he opened his shop. The year was 1934-- the great Depression was at its greatest depths-- and he was a 21-year-old fresh out of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Thirty five years later he sold the store but continued to work there for another 12 years part time.

Ashley`s is long gone now, but neither the store nor its owner will be forgotten. Chester Ashley served Attleboro well.

To Tom, Brad and Pete:

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. It was a nice picture of him in the newspaper.

When you think of Attleboro you should remember the forts we built in the woods as kids, the fun we had on Prudence Island, and the friendships we forged in high school. I'm very happily married with two teenage daughters in North Attleboro. I worked in the Attleboro Court for 18 years, where I arraigned some of the guys from our youth. I've been at the Wrentham District Court since 1998.

Your father was a great and accomplished man of few words, but important words. I remember him well. Hold on to those memories to sustain and comfort your future.

Sincerely,

Ed Doherty

Our deepest sympathy in the loss of your dad, "Chet". I have fond memories of your dad that go way back to Saturday mornings at the soda fountain! I will surely treasure the chuckles we had in the PT room at Epoch and the quiet conversations we had just last weekend. Please know you're in our thoughts and prayers!
