WESTPORT - Chester Roland DeGroff passed away peacefully on June 5, 2007, at the age of 80. He was born in Westport, N.Y., on Feb. 26, 1927, the son of Chester and Clara (Edwards) DeGroff.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean (Reidlinger) of Westport; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Dianna DeGroff of Westport, Kurt and Annie DeGroff of Provo, Utah, Ian and Helen DeGroff of Westport; one daughter and son-in-law, Heide and Mike Doyle of Lewis; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Carlos (Denny) DeGroff; and a sister, Gladys Mauran, both of Westport.
Chet worked for Treadwell Estates and Bessboro Farm LLC for 46 years until retiring in 1992. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in which he held many positions and was instrumental in bringing a branch to Westport.
Chet also served on the boards of the Village of Westport and the Westport Central School for many years. He served as a member of the military police in World War II in Germany and was always a member of the American Legion in Westport.
Chet dedicated his life to his family and to helping others. He was a great carpenter and loved to build things in his youth. He loved storytelling and many people still remember the stories he told about his childhood and the history of Westport and surrounding areas.
In his youth, Chet was an excellent athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball and golf.
A private graveside service is planned per his wishes and at the convenience of the family.
