Chester HULL Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Apr. 11, 2012.
HULL, Chester
Lt. Gen. A. (Ret'd), CMM, DFC, CD
Born April 19, 1919 in Edinburgh, Scotland; died in Belleville, Ontario, April 9, 2012. Survived by his wife of over 71 years, Jane (Currier), and children Brian (Terry), Diana and Sally, and grandchildren Thomas and Lucus Morison. Chester attended the Royal Military College in Kingston where he rose to become "top" cadet as Battalion Sgt. Major (BSM). He and his classmates graduated early in October 1939 in order to serve in World War II. He elected to follow in his father's footsteps and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He saw distinguished service overseas as a bomber pilot in 420 and 428 Squadrons and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his skill and valour and became Senior Operations Controller of 6 Group (RCAF) RAF Bomber Command as a Group Captain while still only 25 years old. When the war ended he chose to stay in the RCAF with appointments in Ottawa, staff college in Toronto, and, in 1947 he became Commanding Officer (CO) of RCAF Clinton. Following further staff assignments in Ottawa, he became Base Commander and founding commander of No. 3 (Fighter) Wing in Zweibrucken, Germany. Returning to Canada in 1956, he had assignments in St. Hubert and Ottawa. In 1962, he was appointed Chief of Staff of Air Defence Command (ADC) in St. Hubert, with the rank of Air Commodore. For a short time, he served as Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of ADC before promotion to Air Vice Marshall in 1967 as AOC of Air Transport Command, Trenton. In 1972, following unification of the forces, he was appointed Lieutenant General and Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. Ches retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1974 after 41 years of illustrious service and shortly thereafter was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for his wartime assistance to the Free French Forces. In civilian life, he served as National Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of Canada, president of the Quinte Arts Council and a founding influence in the launching of, initially, the RCAF Memorial Museum. At CFB Trenton, he held the appointment of honorary colonel from 1998 until 2003. He served as chair of the Bomber Harris Trust, established to defend the outstanding heroism and service to country of Canadian members of RAF Bomber Command. Much travelled, a life-time gardener and an avid reader, he continued to contribute to the lives of those around him to his very last breath. He was much loved and will be sadly missed. Services entrusted to BURKE FUNERAL HOME, Belleville (613-968-6968). Visitation will be held at CFB Trenton 8-Wing Chapel on Friday, April 13, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. Memorial Service to follow at 1 p.m. Padre Sid Horne and Major (Rev.) Tracy Graf officiating. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society or Charity of your Choice would be appreciated. Online condolences at burkefuneral.ca

Dear Mrs. Hull and Family,

I just learned of Chester's passing and wish to extend my sympathy and condolences.

My late mother, Helen Irene Hull, daughter of the late George McLean Hull, (I think) brother to Allan H. Hull, Chester's dad, first made me aware of Allan's and Chester's (father and son) outstanding accomplishments and service to Canada and the Commonwealth.

It was amazing for me to learn that Chester had survived the 30 bombing missions that were expected of RAF bomber command aircrews, very few did.

It was more amazing to discover that both father and son had independantly risen to such a high ranking within the Canadian armed forces. From the little I have been able to appreciate, both men were responsible for developing and mentoring many good people, and I mean many.

I learned of Chester's passing, by chance, on Youtube. I have always had a fondness for flying and airplanes and came across a flying model replica of a Lancaster, that the builders had designated as one from the 428 Ghost Squadron. This perked my interest and I was searching to see if the modelers had a similar family connection to the squadron. Will let you know if I find a connection to Chester.

My late mother had mentioned (thought) that one of the two had gone back to university very late in life and had passed the bar and practiced law or became a Judge on Vancouver Island in BC. Was never able to confirm this but seems like it could be another 'typical' Hull accomplisment.

I have a few articles and photos that I will try and dig up and add here when I am able.

Just wanted to let you know that my mother thought often of both and was very proud of them, me too.

I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Mrs. Hull and family,

I just heard from my parents (Len and Shirley Johnson) of General Hull's passing. My deepest condolences to you all.

I remember afternoons spent with Sally graciously entertaining this twelve-year old girl in the house on the circle at CFB Trenton. Even though my family moved into the same house a few years later, it has always been "The Hull's House" to us.

Best wishes to you all.

So sorry to hear of LGen Hull's passing. He was good friend of my parents from my dad's RMC connections, and I had the privilege to see him on numerous occasions. A dedicated airman who larger than life in many ways. Deepest condolences to the whole family.

My wife and I would like to add out condolences to the Hull
family on the loss of their husband and father. I had the
pleasure and honour of knowing him over a three year period. As part of the advanced party for 427 (F) Sqdn and as a pilot for two years. I enjoyed a final year in Zweibrucken as his Persona lAssistant. A true gentleman and a great Station Commander. Jim and Nan Bridges

Dear Jane, Brian, Diana and Sally I have many fond memories of our Manotick days...wonderful meals, swimming in the river, canoing and carefree play days. It was good to Ches a couple years ago. God bless all of you. Love and hugs.

Dear Jane and family,
I was saddened to learn of Chester's passing. He was a great friend and mentor while I served at 8 Wing Trenton, and I enjoyed his regular drop-ins at my office, lunches together, and especially visits to your home. I have thought of you often since I've been away from Trenton. He will be missed.
R.I.P. good and faithful servant.

I am saddened to hear that General Hull has passed away. He and his wife, Jane, were friends of my parents for many years. He was much admired.
We have just lost our beloved mother, Harriet Simmons, and feel your sense of lost.
