Christopher Black Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2025.
Christopher Allin Black, age 64, passed away suddenly at his home in North Bend, Washington on Sunday, January 5th, 2025. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, on March 10,1960, Chris grew up in Huron, SD and graduated from Huron High School in 1978. He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion before embarking on a successful, lifelong technical career in Nondestructive Testing, attaining the highest levels of proficiency in his field.

He began his career in Iowa at Quad City Testing, inspecting welds and learning the ropes from his brother Stephen, then worked in the oil and gas industry in Houston before settling down in the Seattle region as a Level III inspector for Boeing. His list of accomplishments include receiving the 1998 Boeing Commercial Division award for Fabrication Inspector of the Year. In 2013, the American Society of Nondestructive Testing honored Chris as Mentor of the Year and again in 2015 with their highest honor as Technician of the Year. Boeing also honored him in 2015 with their Meritorious Invention award which led to his subsequent patent in 2017 for conceiving and designing a device to detect lost tools inside an aircraft. (Patent no: 9,772,422 B2).

He also shared his specialized knowledge by teaching the next generation at Clover Park Technical College from 2012-2019, where he was the recipient of their award for Outstanding Mentoring Skills. As a Union representative and member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Chris retired from Boeing in 2023 after 36 years and 7 months. He continued to work part time as an independent contractor with his own firm, CBI NDT Consulting.

When he wasn't working, he was fishing. A passion since childhood, Chris was a walking encyclopedia when it came to cutthroat, steelhead and rainbow trout. He knew everything about the salmon spawning cycle and, of course, tied his own flies, so whether lake or stream fishing, Chris was content when he had a fishing pole in his hand. He also loved to ski and was known to confidently lead family and friends down double black diamond runs. And when he wasn't out enjoying the great outdoors, he was working on his property, recently completing DIY projects as he prepared to leave his river front home in North Bend and move back to his roots in the Black Hills.

Chris had a dry sense of humor that could ignite a room full of belly laughs. His lifelong friends were like family to him. He recently hosted his 45th high school class reunion at his retirement property on Rapid Creek. He enjoyed sharing stories and photos of the months he lived in a hotel in Naples, Italy or the times he visited the Rolls Royce jet engine factory in England or riding along as test pilots took off on a virgin flight. He even briefly appeared in a Discovery Channel documentary while working in Australia as he traveled the world for Boeing. Down to earth and practical, he had a knack for remembering names, dates and phone numbers, but to his family, he was Uncle Chris, gifting model airplanes to his grand nieces and nephews or teaching the basics of casting a fishing line.

A lifelong bachelor, he was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Black and Jacqueline Black, his brother Tony and sister-in-law Mindy, and his grandparents, Charles & Val Black and Fred & Gladys Brown, all of Rapid City. He is survived by his brother, Stephen and sister-in-law Cindy, his sister, Leann Mueller, his nieces and nephews, Stephanie DeBoever, Bryon Black, Kathryn Johnson, Eric Mueller, Jonathan Black and Jessica Klein, his Aunt Judi Helmer, cousins Terri Helmer-Aaris and Greg Helmer and 15 grand nieces and nephews.

As we mourn the untimely loss of our dear family member, co-worker and friend, "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace."

Chris' remains will be cremated with a private event for family and friends to follow in the Black Hills this summer.

I worked with Chris at Boeing for about 25 yrs. I liked Chris a lot he was very knowledgeable and always willing to help anybody. We shared a passion in fly fishing and fly tying and I marveled at his knowledge base but I was not surprised because anything he had an interest in he would master, I´m saddened about Chris passing but am so glad I got to know him he was truly a good guy and count yourself lucky if you knew him. RIP Chris! Tight lines in heaven!

Chris taught me how to fly fish. He would cut open the first fish he caught to see what it was eating. If he didn't have the fly he needed he would get out his kit and tie it right there.

We had a lot of good memories together. We took a helicopter flight together when i was young which was the coolest thing ever. We went skiing together at Whistler when I was in University. It was incredible. He came to my graduation a few months after that. We met up along the years. We had a good time in NY and Philadlelphia in 2006. He convinced me to come move out to Seattle. We drove the whole way, just the two of us with all my belongings.

Miss you Chris!

We didn´t know Chris very long but what we discovered very quickly was that he was very intelligent, thoughtful, and welcoming. He was always willing to share memories of his life long friends, his fascinating career, his love of fishing, and his South Dakota roots. We truly enjoyed meeting him and spending time with him at his retirement home in the Black Hills during Sturgis Rallies. He welcomed us simply because a friend asked. While there, we also spent time on Pactola Lake so the guys could fish and "Captain Kim" could have her fun. He was such a special person and will be missed.

I will always remember Chris from our days at Jefferson School. He was kind to everyone and hosting our 45th class reunion was a very special time for all of us that attended. Thanks Chris for being you and sharing a small part of your life with all of us.

This just makes me so sad. I've known Chris since he was a boy. He was cute and funny and a lot of fun to be around. We had so much fun back in the day. I'm so sorry to his family and friends for their loss. I loved his face book posts and the PMs we would get about Boeing, fishing and his travels. Rest in peace Chris. Say hi to Michele and Scott and all the others there before us.

My fondest memory with Chris was of course, fishing. This particular time we found a spot off the Snoqualmie River. He gave tips and tricks on catching a steal head and before I knew it, I caught the biggest fish I´ve ever caught to this day. Chris couldn´t believe it, in fact he thought I was snagged before I finally got that big boy reeled in. From that day forward, we always gave each other a hard time on who was better at fishing, who can catch the biggest fish, etc. It was always great fun to joke around with him. He will be missed.

I remember seeing him around high school, although we never hung out there was something about him. It was like a secret crush, a wondering who was this guy. Later in life we connected at class reunions and I felt a connection with him, he was my friend now. I'm going to miss him and regret we didn't have more time. Goodbye my friend!

I can remember living in Renton Washington and living 10 minutes away from my dear uncle Chris! I would see him almost every other day! We spent a lot of time together and tooling around in his spots car!! We went to the Boeing store and he wanted to buy me a Boeing sweat shirt! I lived there for 4.5 years!!! Very sad when I made a move back to Iowa to start a new life! He would make an effort to fly out to Iowa to see me for certain holidays!!! I remember his very dry personality and how I loved to be around him because he was funny person to be around!!! Always mad me laugh!!!! For the last 3 years I have been texting Chris and sending pictures of my 3 year old grandson and just recently sent him pictures of my new grandson Hudson that is now 4 months old!!! I wanted to keep him updated because I knew he would never be able to see them!! I love you uncle Chris RIP

Most of memories with out dear Uncle Chris were fishing. He would come out to the Black Hills in the summer, rent a pontoon on Pactola Lake, he would fish, I would jumo of the boat swimming, often in his fishing zone, and he never got upset if I was in his, he would warn me if I near his hook. But never upset with me. She was full of wisdom and the keeper of the family history, my go to guy when I had a question about when an adventure took place , or needed someone's phone number. I would often wake up to LONG texts with info about The Boeing 737s, or the happenings at Boeing, having no idea what he was talking about, but still delighted he wanted to share his world with me. He loved his family, and friends, and often lived his friends as family. Losing this man is devastating, shocking and heartbreaking, he was loved immensely and will be missed as much as he was loved. Rest easy Chris, don't pick on dad too much
