Christopher "Chris" Lavery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2014.
Age 59, of Halifax, NS on April 7, 2014. Born in Halifax on May 31, 1954 he was the son of the late Arthur and Hazel (Dubaie) Lavery. He was a 33 year veteran of the DND fire department. Despite constant treatment failures for his cancer, Chris perservered to live life to the fullest with the time remaining and managed to enjoy several short trips including a Moncton Casino trip with his sisters, a Toronto trip for a Blue Jay game and a trip to Florida with friends. He always looked forward to the regular lunches at the Timberlea Tavern with his hockey pals and managed a few last trips to Moncton to watch their tournaments. He enjoyed gathering with friends and family and was so happy that the annual Keji trip in 2013 was modified to accommodate his limitations. In the 70s he back-packed through Europe then resumed travelling in the late 90s with his travel mate Cathy, visiting a number of countries. He could be relied upon to sample the local club sandwiches no matter what country he happened to visit. He lived most of his life in his beloved Purcell's Cove and never tired of watching the harbor activity from his deck, and later, his comfy armchair. Hockey was his passion. Over the years he coached, refereed, managed and/or played. An avid Maple Leaf fan, he never lost faith that they would again repeat their 1967 success. He was a friend to many and could be relied upon to show up with a paint brush or tool in hand when a project was underway. He cherished the time spent watching his children in the various sports that they participated in and would juggle his work schedule to ensure that he rarely missed a game. Xavier bought him joy and laughter during a time when life was most difficult. He is survived by his wife of almost 35 years Cathy (Fraser), daughter Natalie, son Jeff ( Jackie) and grandson Xavier, sisters Liz, Pamela (Fred) Baizana, Paula (Dave) Doucette, brother in law Wes Howard, nephews and neice Sophie. He was predeceased by brothers Milton and Jack and his sister Melba (Howard). Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.A. Snows. A memorial service will take place at Snows, 339 Lacewood drive, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00am. Donation may be made to the Cancer Society to help in the aid of research and treatment of bladder cancer.

To the Lavery family. Five years have past now. Still think of Chris from time to time out of the blue. His impression on me will never pass. He will always be there. I never met a more sincere, honest and caring person.

Five years has passed so quickly for some of us but I'm sure not for all. Thinking of you and the day of his service vividly as we let balloons fly from the beach in Hilton Head, as we are looking over the same beach today.

Chris touched my parents 'life when they were visiting from Chile a few years ago , he and Cathy had us for lunch and to see the Parade of Sails coming into the Harbour. They still remember that......Thank you. Our prayers for you and family.

Like many of his friends, I first met Chris playing hockey for the Armdale Rangers, many years ago now. You learn a lot about a person's character through sport. What I observed about Chris was his competitive spirit, his personal determination, his work ethic and his team work. The last time I saw Chris, despite his battle with cancer, he was exactly the same as always, full of good humour and positive about life. Chris was always one of the nicest persons I have ever met in my life. My deepest condolences to his wife Cathy and family during this most difficult time.

Cathy, Natalie, Jeff and family

One of the benefits of teaching is sometimes being able to watch your students grow. When we first met Chris, he was a rookie at JL both in classes and on the hockey team. We were able to watch him mature, graduate, marry, begin his chosen career, raise his children. We would not meet often in the early years; but when we did, it was like Chris was meeting old friends. What a treat that is for former teachers to be welcomed as friends.
Living in the same community has some advantages and teaching the children of former students is one. When Natalie and Jeff came to JL, we would meet Chris as the proud and interested dad who always had the time for his children's interests.
We have lost one of the good guys. Please be assured he will be remembered in our hearts.

So sorry to hear of Chris' passing. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family at this difficult time. Our thoughts are with you,

Over 40 years fell away when I saw Chris's photo and read of his passing today. As a classmate throughout high school, I joined friends in the bleachers to watch Chris in many a "J L Judges" game at "The Forum". HIs character was well shaped then, and the integrity, focus, diligence and love of fun would have stayed with him through all the time since. My heartfelt condolences go out to Chris's family and others whose lives he touched. Colleen Clarke

We are deeply saddened by the news of Chris' passing. We remember a man who was most gracious, considerate, and generous at all times, even during the heat of a tough hockey game. Chris is so well known for his hockey exploits, but I remember him fondly too for his craftsmanship as a mason. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kathy, Jeff, and Natalie and all Chris' family this day, Ross, Donna and Chris Evans.

Dear Cathy, Natalie and Jeff. There are so many people who share your loss, we can only imagine the void left with Chris's passing. Chris was my first ever hockey coach and when i was old and good enough I got to play with him on his beloved Armdale Rangers hockey club. Chris lavery was first and formost a true gentlemen, and an honest and fun loving person. A few of us got to spend a lunch with him 10 days before he passed away, we shared lots of stories, laughs and tears. All of us were soothed by his spirit and calmness as he faced his future. Chris will be remembered and loved by many. I am blessed to have been in his circle of friends.
