Christopher Bennett Ogden

Author, photographer and TIME correspondent

Christopher Ogden, who for decades was a senior journalist for TIME Magazine and the author of several biographies, died August 27 in Honolulu, HI. He was 77 years old.

The death resulted from a fall near his home on Kauai, Hawaii, according to his wife, Linda Fuselier.

Mr. Ogden was an international correspondent, first for UPI in London and the USSR, followed by a decades long career with TIME Magazine where he was the chief diplomatic correspondent and columnist. He also served as TIME's bureau chief in Chicago and London. His iconic TIME cover photograph of Soviet author and dissident, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

He authored several biographies including: Maggie, a profile of UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; Life of the Party, a New York Times best-selling biography of Pamela Harriman; and Legacy, a multi-generational biography of US business leaders, Moses and Walter Annenberg.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1945. His father, Michael J. Ogden, was a prominent journalist and managing editor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Providence Journal. His mother, Agga Bennett Ogden, was a homemaker. He graduated from Portsmouth Abbey School in 1962 and attended Yale University, graduating in 1966.

His fascination with other countries began in 1953 when as a 7 year old boy he accompanied his parents on a year-long sabbatical in post-WWII Europe. After graduating from Yale, he served as an Army Intelligence Officer in the Viet Nam War.

Mr Ogden had a lifelong passion to understand life, cultures, and politics from Washington, DC to the Middle East. His grasp of global affairs was developed through his years of covering the White House and US Secretaries of State Kissinger, Vance and Baker.

He leaves a worldwide network of friends who will miss him forever.

He is survived by his wife and partner of 22 years, Linda Fuselier of Kauai, HI; his son, Michael and family of London and his daughter, Margaret of Washington, DC. His first marriage to Deedy Ogden ended in divorce.

Mr. Ogden did not want a funeral or memorial service. He asked that he be remembered through contributions to Planned Parenthood, Inc. and the Surfrider Foundation. \par \qc Arrangements Provided By: \par \qc Oahu Mortuary

I worked with Chris in the 1990s in the Time Washington bureau. As a fellow Rhode Islander, we had lots of stories to share. He was a knowledgeable and kind colleague, always willing to share his insights and analysis with younger correspondents. Godspeed, Chris.

Chris was a wonderful, stylish, entertaining journalist and a warm, companionable and puckish human being. I worked closely with him for some years at TIME and deeply regret that we fell out of touch. A life well and happily lived, too soon over.

Rest in heavenly Peace, Chris. Chris was at Portsmouth with me and then in DC for decades while at TIME. He always was interesting to talk and never full of himself. Sadly we have fewer reporters like him researching and writing objectively about their stories. He was always both a joy to talk to and to learn about his trips and thoughts. In sincere sympathy , Jim R from the New Dorm at Portsmouth Abbey School

Chris was my prefect during the 1961-62 school year. He seemed scary and stern at first then his warmth and intellect came through. I know that we are all diminished by his passing. RIP

I played on the Portsmouth Abbey football team with Chris. He was a year ahead of me and was very kind and supportive of a younger kid trying to earn some respect on the football field. Chris was a good player and a true gentleman to me

Chris and Linda were frequent walkers up at our local park here on Kauai Kukuiolono. I so enjoyed our talks and words of encouragement over the last year. A warm and gentle soul he was . Aloha Chris

Although we were classmates at Yale, I only met Chris in the last year or so, after he came to Kauai in his retirement.
Kind. Wise. Always seeking to learn about others. Funny. Those are just a few of the character traits that I got to learn about.
His death is a terrible loss for his Kauai friends.
