After 76 years of a wonderful life, father, friend and mentor John Charles Harmon aka Chuck Harmon of Syracuse died surrounded by love on February 11, 2019. Born on June 16th, 1942 in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Sherman A. Harmon and Josephine P. Harmon, Chuck grew up in Dallas, Pittsburgh and Kansas City before his family settled in Philadelphia. At the age of 8, he was admitted into the renowned William Penn Charter School on a scholarship where he learned, played and excelled in football, baseball and basketball. Chuck attended Syracuse University on a football scholarship. During this time, he fell in love with Syracuse, its people and its abundant outdoor life. Upon graduation, he played semi-professional football for the AFL on the team now known as the Atlanta Falcons. Shortly after his football career, he took a job at Hillbrook Detention Facility as a Youth Counselor where he stayed for 40 years before retiring as the Superintendent of Hillbrook. After retiring, he took a job as an Early Intervention Mentor for first and second graders at Edward Smith School. Chuck's life was full and hobbies included flying, fishing, golfing, hunting, sailing , skiing, motocross, model airplanes, boating, camping, cooking, baking, gardening, canning, music, films & theater, photography, scuba diving, snowmobiling and much more. He was also a lover of fine whiskey and a cigar aficionado. Some organizations he was involved with include the Juvenile Detention Association of New York State, Labrador Mountain Ski Club, The Stockbridge Valley Flying Club, The Elbridge Rod and Gun Club, Syracuse University Black Alumni, New York State Division for Youth and was inducted into the inaugural class of the William Penn Charter Athletic Honour Society. He is survived by former wives Donna Crichton and Michalle Harmon, co-parent Detria Watson, daughters Anneliese Harmon and Chyleigh Harmon, sister Josephine Harmon Williams, brother Allen Sherman Harmon, Kurtria Hunter, a host of nieces and nephews, Godchildren, other relatives and his beloved pets Jabba and Ziva. A Celebration of Life organized by his daughters and his best friend of 60 years Sid Oglesby, who misses him dearly, will take place at 6pm, with visiting hours from 4-6pm on Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at Burns Garfield Funeral Home Inc., 3175 East Genesee St, Syracuse New York 13224. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Chuck's love of animals, contributions in his name may be sent to Humane CNY, a no-kill animal shelter. Chuck will be missed but choose a rare beautiful sunny day with a high ceiling and visibility, perfect conditions for his final flight to heaven…or maybe "the other place" he joked with his signature laugh.

Words in them self can't explain the sadness of losing a loved one. In last talking to Chuck he had told me of the sadness that he wasn't able to attend Bill funeral who had passed 6/2018, but I knew Chuck himself did not want to suffer. He was such a great great close friend, wonderful father, and just enjoyed life in its self.

I never met Mr Harmon but I know Anneliese. The live and respect she had for him said it all. The kind of person she is tells me about the man that raised her. I heard wonderful stories of this great man.

John Charles was my cousin and he will be greatly missed. He always made time to visit my father when he was in town. I cherish the special relationship he had with my mother the comfort he gave me at her funeral.

Aside from my Mother and Father, I always remember my Uncle Chuck being in my life from the time I was in diapers. You were my Father's best friend. You loved and supported me as your own. At the times I knew my Father couldn't be there, you rose to the occasion. I still remember playing upstairs at your house on that old computer while you two fussed, drank, ate pigs feet and played cribbage downstairs. All that time I spent on that old computer is why I went into technology. You, my Father, and my Mother are the reason for my success. When I took my first steps, you were there. When I started school, you were there. When my Mother fell ill, you were there. When my Father fell ill, you were there. When I had my son, you were there. I know you will be watching over all of us from heaven. It still hurts that I can't hug you when I hit another milestone. Thank you for loving me as your own. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your wonderful life. Will love you always, Uncle Chuck.

Chuck was an inspirational member of the Wm. Penn Charter School Community in the middle 1950s and early 1960s. He served as a pioneer and role model for many students who followed him at our school. We are so grateful here at Penn Charter that we were able to honor Chuck and his Penn Charter achievements in our recent history publication, "History Revealed". Chuck's pioneering contributions and inspirational spirit remain very much alive and present today within the memory and culture of the Wm. Penn Charter School.

I was blessed to know Chuck through my sister, Donna, and brother-in-law, Sid Oglesby. He was, truly, a man of grace, kindness, and love. It was an honor to know him and share some wonderful moments of laughter and simple enjoyment of the present moment of life with him. He was a gracious giver of his time, talents, wisdom, and compassion to others. Chuck loved his family and friends dearly and brought joy to so many whose paths he crossed. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

The statement in his obituary referring to the bright, sunny day seems so appropriate for a memory I have of Chuck. I was a receptionist in the County Budget office and got to see Chuck off and on. He was never mean to me, but perhaps it was his position and his matter-of-fact demeanor in business dealings that made me feel a bit timid around him. That is until one day when he called and went to leave a message for someone, and he could hear that I had a cold. After writing his message he asked me to do one more thing; to go outside and get some of the beautiful sunshine of that day, to try to make me feel better. That gave me a whole new liking of him. I remember him very fondly.

Dear Mr Harmon, I didn't ever meet you (heard you deep voice in the background numerous times though!), but your daughter Annelise is one of my dearest best friends. She's shared years worth of stories about you- you were her hero and i thank you for giving me the gift of her friendship. May you rest in eternal peace knowing you have left an incredible legacy.
