Clare Rothermel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2008.
ROTHERMEL-Clare passed away peacefully on July 1, 2008, 15 years to the day that he and Marion moved to Pemberton, British Columbia. Clare was predeceased by his parents, his sister and brothers. Along with countless friends, he will be lovingly remembered by Marion, his wife of 56 years; his children, Wendy (Randy) Kuntz; Janice Rothermel; Marty (Bridget Keating) Rothermel, and Charlie Rothermel. His eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren will also cherish his memory: Casey (Alyssa) Lawford; Morgan Lawford; Tyler Kuntz; Hayley (Rick Letwinka) Lawford; Marty Lawford; Travis, Tess and Tom Kuntz; Greatgrandchildren, Ciaran, Elias, Jada, Odessa, Sunny, and Meryk. He will always be remembered by special nephew Richard (Solie) Rothermel and their children. Clare lived life to the fullest. At the age of 17, he joined the navy and was stationed in the South Pacific while serving in World War II. Upon his return, he worked as a firefighter before joining Saskpower, where he worked for a number of years before owning CR Electric. It was during this time that Clare developed his passion for hockey. He was the trainer for the Regina Caps and ultimately went on to become the president of the Western Canada Hockey League. This would pave the way for his 25 year scouting career with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Clare's scouting career would take him all over Canada and the United States, as well as Czechoslovakia, Finland, Russia and most of Europe. He always looked forward to the NHL Draft and the annual Golf Tournament. Clare was very proud to say, although seldom did, that he had a hand in drafting Mario Lemieux. During his scouting career, he also found time for his love of horses, owning and racing a little pacer named Rite Cracker, who proved to be very successful on the race track. He also dabbled in the furniture business at Chuck's Bargain Centre where he always gave a good deal! Clare enjoyed many recreational activities, including golfing, fishing at Regina Beach, and skiing at Whistler Mountain. His last hit at the slopes was only two years ago. He was also an excellent swimmer and, over the past few years, became a self-taught wood carver. Clare's new love of carving would take him to Bali to work with local artisans as he strived to improve his technique. Most days he could be found at the Pemberton Pole Yard picking choice pieces of cedar to build benches for his family and friends. Clare also had a great love for animals and there were always a few cats and a dog or two to share his home. A celebration for Clare will be held on August 23, 2008 at Big Sky Golf Course in Pemberton, B.C. He will then travel home with his children and go fishing at Regina Beach one last time. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.mem.com . Donations to your local Humane Society in Clare's memory would be greatfully accepted. Clare was one of those people who made friends wherever he went. His kindness, generosity and great smile will stay with all who knew and loved him.

Marion and family,

Clare will be greatly missed in the community. He was a great man with a kind heart. Whenever I think back to my time in Pemberton a story involving Clare always brings a smile to my face. His contributions to the community and the local golf courses will never be forgotten. The community will not be the same without his smiling face.
