CLARENCE ELVIN HULL

CLARENCE HULL Obituary

Published by The Chronicle from Dec. 31, 2008 to Jan. 1, 2009.
Clarence Elvin Hull, 84, longtime Chehalis resident, beloved son, husband, father and grandfather, died December 26, 2008, just hours after celebrating Christmas with his entire family. Though frail and in declining health, his passing was a real shock after having such a wonderful day together.
He was born May 19, 1924, the second of three sons of Elvin Ellis and Milla Lois (Stallard) Hull in Powers, Oregon. He grew up in Powers and was a 1942 graduated of Powers High School. He attended the University of Oregon for one year before entering the Army in July 1943. He was wounded on January 16, 1945 and spent 1 1/2 years recuperating at Madigan Hospital. He wore the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Eurpean Theater ribbon for his actions.
Clarence returned to the University of Oregon and graduated in 1949. He worked in newspaper advertising for 40 years in Roseburg and Pendleton, Oregon, Ventura, California and at the Daily Chronicle in Centralia/Chehalis. He retired in March 1990 after 24 years at the Chronicle.
He was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America, both in California and Washington. He was a longtime member and past president of Chehalis Rotary Club, past president of the Chehalis Chamber of Commerce, and a presidential appointee to the Selective Service Board. He was also very active in United Way and other organizations in Lewis County.
Clarence married Patricia McPherson on April 13, 1952. Their two children are Chuck and his wife Nancy Hull of Rochester, and Anne and her husband Don Wachtveitl of Bothell. Beloved grandchildren are Danielle Hull, Caitlin, Rachel and Drew Wachtveitl and daughter-in-law Nancy's children, Court, Connor and Carianne Hyatt.
He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and stamp collecting. Travel was also a big part of their lives and Pat and Clarence enjoyed trips to many destinations in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as well as Costa Rica, the Bahamas and Virgin Islands. Favorite places they often visited were Hawaii and their second home in Palm Springs. The trips subsided as his health deteriorated, but he enjoyed many years at the family home, reading, doing crosswords, and watching sports on TV. Basketball may have been his favorite as Clarence played a lot of basketball in high school and college.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Milla Hull, his younger brother Don, and two infant children. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Clarence is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Louise Hull of Portland, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and special family friends, Carl Bamford of Eugene, and Harvey Bamford of Rochester.
Clarence's sense of humor, quick wit, quiet strength, and generosity will be greatly missed. We will forever cherish him in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Chehalis First Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chehalis First Christian Church Building Fund or a favorite charity. A private burial service will be held in Powers, Oregon at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Brown Mortuary Service, Chehalis.

Dear Pat, Chuck, Anne and your families,
Words are going to pale in expressing our sympathy for you. Take comfort in the good and special memories you have of Clarence, and hold them close during this difficult time.
Clarence was such a wonderful gentleman, a very generous friend, and an unforgettable mentor. Many years ago his introduction to the world of advertising redirected a young man's career goals, and his many lessons are still working today.
