JONESVILLE, Va. – Claude Calvin Jones, age 89, of the Sandy Ridge Community, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 in Tazewell at the home of Dennis, Mary Jane, and Jameson Jones.
He was born on August 16, 1915 at Edison, Tenn. and was a son of the late Enoch Calvin Jones and Ida Grace Stout Jones.
He was a member of the Bowling Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville. He was retired from ASG Industries in 1970 and was a retired farmer. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1940 to 1943 and was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant. Prior to serving in the military he spent five years as a sheep herder in Idaho.
He was an avid outdoorsman, carpenter, curator of Indian artifacts, gardener, and farmer and a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, uncle, neighbor and friend.
Claude Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Bell Flanary Jones; his parents, Enoch Calvin Jones and Ida Grace Stout Jones; brothers, J.C. Jones, Olan O. Jones, Earl E. Jones, Garland G. Jones and Burkett Doty Jones; and sister, Beulah B. Jones Freeman.
He is survived by his sons, Dennis Calvin Jones and wife, Mary Jane Harris Jones of Tazewell; Norman A. Jones, Sr. and wife, Tammy Parsons Jones of Blue Ridge, Va.; and stepson, William H. Billy Adkins of the home; four grandchildren, Gregory Calvin Jones and wife, Amy of Bluff City, Jameson Harris Jones of Tazewell, Norman A. Alex Jones, II of Blue Ridge, Va, and Stephanie R. Jones of Stephens City, Va; two great-grandchildren, Alex Calvin Jones and Avery Caroline Jones of Bluff City; nephews, Paul Richard Jones, Wayne Jones, Olan Jones, Chris Jones, David Jones, Ronnie Jones, Mike Jones; nieces, Susan Dennis, Elizabeth Jones, Katherine Ann Blankenship, Zelda Faye Neely, Peggy Bush, Rothella Fleenor, and Linda Cheryl Suffel; three sisters-in-law, Marian Jones, Wilmer Jones, and Edith Hopkins; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Bowling Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Bowling Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville with the Rev. Wayne Rader and the Rev. Rodney Lawson officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Flanary Family Cemetery in the Sandy Ridge Community of Jonesville.
Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bowling Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville.
Arney-Mullins Funeral Home of Jonesville, is in charge of arrangements.
