I met Clem in OKC for National Final Rodeo at the Hilton where I worked and he took me to breakfast with lots of tissues on his face from shaving and he brought his chimp who smoked and drank coffee. I have told many friends and they did not believe me UNTIL a woman came in the shop and knew Clem and the chimp. She told my bosses that I was telling the truth. He was such a nice person and I was only 26 years old, now I am 65. Will never forget him and the chimp.

To all the family of Clem's, I am deeply saddend by his passing. I just heard about it today. He was always someone I admired. I got to know him when I got my PRCA card in the late 60's & we were friends from there on. Truly a loss for his family, & friends. I had E-Mailed him some months ago & hope he got it, as I told him then how much I had appreciated his friendship over the years. God bless everyone.

McSpadden Family,

I had the honor to work with Mr. McSpadden on the movie "My Hero's Have Always Been Cowboys" where I came to admire him greatly. We kept in touch for a few years but sadly lost contact in the past several years. I absolutely loved the man and was out of town last week when he passed. I just found out today and feel a great sense of loss. Please know that I will say some special prayers for your family.

My grandmother worked in the post office in Chelsea, and my grandfather and greatgrandfather ran a barber shop in Chelsea. I was scheduled to announce a rodeo in Chelsea, and Clem was to announce the Steer Roping on Friday. Unfortunately, he was unable to be there Friday, and I did not get a chance to meet him. But I will never forget my grandmothers words to me before I went to the rodeo grounds. She said tell little Clem I said hello. He's such a nice boy. Well they are together again on the great plains in the sky. God be with you. You are a hero in my eyes.

During the 70's I was Recreation Therapist at the Oklahoma Veterans Center,Clinton, Oklahoma and my men (the Veterans) wanted to attend the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. We didn't have the money for the tickets so I picked up the phone, called Mr McSpaden at his home. He asked me how many and I said we would take what we could get. Well guess what!! In a few days we had tickets to the National Finals, my men talked about the rodeo for weeks and weeks. I worked 11 years at the Veterans Center and that was one trip the veterans always remembered. Mr. McSpadden was special person he is truly walking proud. God Bless

Goodbye to a true western gentleman who made all feel special.

As a former competitor and journalist covering rodeo, I am still amazed at the kindness and caring and genuineness of this wonderful community - the community of rodeo.

And Clem McSpadden was one of the best of us. An icon in human form - he carried his greatness with a shrug - a consummate professional and cowboy. And an honor to the word.

The rodeo world will miss you Sir, and I will miss you, yet not having ever met you, I count that fact as a deep personal loss.

Sincerely,
Ralph Clark

There will never be another voice of rodeo that will compare to that of Clem McSpadden. There isn't a time that I hear the "Cowboy's Prayer" that I don't get goose bumps. His voice was so moving. My family has known Clem for years from rodeos he was announcing, to us running the concession stand at the pasture roping. My heart broke when I heard of his passing. What an awesome man and anyone that had the honor of knowing him needs to truly appreciate it cause men like Clem don't come along very often. My thoughts and prayers to his family. What a rodeo they are having in heaven with Clem on that mic! Rest in peace Clem!

McSpadden Family. We have been so blessed for knowing Clem. Donna still think very kindly of you both when I brought soup and bread from our church to you and insisted that I eat with you. What a blessing that was to break bread with the two of you and hear prayer for this meal. You both always took time to visit with me when I came by the office and helped me very much. Bless you all and know that you all are carrying on the work that was started before you. As I look back Clem certainly took after Will Rogers and they are both great men in their own path through life.

I was a Cadet at Oklahoma Military Academy when Mr. McSpadden visited the campus. I was supremely impressed by him. The National Finals Rodeo would never have been as successful as it was in Oklahoma City, without Clem McSpadden. Like they say, the good guys always wear white hats,,,His was the whitest.

I didn't know Clem in the political arena nor in the rodeo arena, but I knew him as a gentle man who lived in Chelsea. When he saw you out in public or if you stopped by the office he took the time to talk with you and encourage you. He will be greatly missed. Donna and the rest of the family may the Lord comfort you and give you peace.

He would be touched by your kind expressions, as am I. He was a man who knew the order of a good life: God, family, community.....and lived it. He wanted to leave anything he touched a little better than he found it. May that spirit live on within each of us.
Bless you.

Clem McSpadden was one of a kind—a truly great Oklahoman. I first met him when he was Senate Pro Tem in the state senate in the 1960s. As a reporter, I followed him around the second district as he campaigned for congress and later thought he was a slam dunk for Governor—only to see him lose to youngster named David Boren. Later I worked government relations for Oklahoma Natural Gas and we used Clem as our contract lobbyist. I was elected to the state House in 2006 and he entered my life once again. It seems Clem has always been there. I don’t believe I have ever known anyone in my 60 years of life in Oklahoma who personified our great state better than Clem McSpadden. I will miss him, as will Oklahoma. Our prayers and sympathy are extended to the family of this great man.

Tonight there are tears in Chelsea, Oklahoma , but there are smiles in heaven because God has called Clem McSpadden home & when he met him at the Pearly gates he said “Come on in Clem your entry fees have been paid.” They were all there to welcome him home, Lane Frost, Jim Shoulders just to name a few. I know there is sadness in a lot of folks heart, but there is a smile beneath their tears & their lives were made better just knowing the man named Clem.

It didn’t matter how many times you had won the world or if you was an up & coming star, or just a rodeo fan, Clem always had time to shake your hand & had a story to tell. It didn’t matter to him if you was a competitor, or just a rodeo fan, an elder like himself, a millionaire, or dirt poor he looked on everyone with the same respect.

My Dad told stories of when Clem roped calves & when he got into politics. Clem brought everything good to not just life, but rodeos he announced, whether the NFR in Oklahoma City, or the rodeo in Vinita, when he asked everyone to stand & Cowboys remove cover there was a calm silence & every head was lowered & a lump even in the toughest Cowboys throat & I believe when he asked for no special favors, he asked that not just in the rodeo arena, but also in the arena of life.

Clem I know you are truly missed by us all, but God needed an announcer & the very best got the call. I know in my heart that when I get the call you will be standing there with old Saint Peter with my back number in your hand saying “ Come on in Cowboy your entry fees have been paid.”

The first time I met Clem was at the 1972 NFR I was just a kid. Then while in college I met him at the Hinton,OK. Rodeo what an honor to be introduced during the steer wrestling by the same man that had intrduced my grandfather at many rodeos in the late 50s and early 60s. Then a few years later I was at Quail Springs Mall and Clem was sitting on a bench outside one of the stores waiting on his wife. I sat down and he started visiting just like we were neighbors. It always amazed my how much knowlege he carried and how he remembered the names of everyone and the towns they were from and the horses they rode. In 2000 I was fortunate to get to serve on the OSU Rodeo Alumni committee with Clem. He was atrue ambassador to Oklahoma, Rodeo, and the western way of life. Jack Wilkerson was my grandfather, we burried him last month. The good lord needed an announcer for all those top hands.

I loved the Cowboys Prayer that he said at the Dodge Rodeo and got to meet him at my Uncle Bill's for Sunday dinner after the Rodeo. He was a very nice person..who could make you laugh.. He will be missed especially by the Austens who became very dear friends of his. God be with the Family at this time.

The halls of the State Capitol will forever seem less grand with the loss of this great gentleman. Always gracious to one and all, his presence will be missed tremendously. My sympathy to Donna, Bart and the entire family.

I first met Clem's voice as a young girl who loved to attend the Hinton Rodeo every July. His excitement and knowledge of the sport was contagious and made the rodeo experience for me.

Later I met then man while working for the Oklahoma Pork Council. He was always busy with endeavors at the Capitol but always took time to visit and help me with a few OPC marketing projects. After I went to Brazil with the Okla. Ag Leadership Program I'd cross Clem's path and he'd say, "let's have lunch and talk about your trip and be sure to bring the pictures." Well, I'm so sorry we didn't get to have lunch in this life but I'm looking forward to it in the next.

Donna, Bart and all the McSpadden family: you're in my prayers.

What more can be said about this great man who could editoralize a rodeo play-by play with such a smooth yet enthusiastic presentation. I,ll always miss the great old time stories you told at the steer ropings. You were always a walking enclopedia of information about the contesstants ,their families and their horses. In addition to your political endevors and rodeo promotion, You have eulogized Big stars such as Bob Wills ,Freckles Brown, Jim Shoulders and many lesser known stars such as Hump Halsey & Jim Call. You are leaving behind a whole host of friends. You will be greatly missed. To Donna, Bart, and family our thoughts and prayers are with you. Bill & Gwenda.

In years past we attended many rodeos but they were never as interesting or entertaining if Clem was not at the mike. He was the ultimate benchmark for other sports announcers to strive for.

Always a smile; always a kind word; always a good story. That's how we'll remember our good friend Clem.
Donna and Bart please know that your friends are thinking of you in these difficult hours. Take the guidance from a good country writer, Mickey Newberry, and use his song "Remember The Good" to help get through the days ahead.

To Donna and family.
I have known Clem since the 1940's and considered him a dear friend. If he knew you he probably knew more about you than you do. There is not a book big enough to list the favors he has done for people and what a memory he could tell you what horse you were riding 40 yrs. ago.
God Bless

Donna, at Claremore I told you that you and Clem meant the world to me and I meant that. Many people in this business call themselves the voice of rodeo. There is only ONE VOICE OF RODEO and that is Clem McSpadden and now he will announce in the greatest arena of all. God Bless

Donna and Jeanne; our prayers are with you. I know this has been a very difficult time for you both.

The McSpadden brothers were each special friends and great influences for our family. From ranching to rodeo, fun fellowship to much needed advice - very little of our history does not include a McSpadden. I know that they are wearing many jewels on their crowns in heaven. Praise the Lord for all the memories!
Love and Prayers,

I met Clem in 1976/77 when I started going to RCA rodeos. Clem was a true gentleman. I loved to listen to his stories of things he endured inbetween rodeos. Clem was the best. He will be missed. God bless his family. Thank you Clem for all the memories, Its hard to think of rodeo, without thinking of Clem.
