Clifton Whitaker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 24, 2025.
Clifton Don Whitaker, 81, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, in Eden, Texas-the same town where he was born on January 31, 1944. A calm and resolute man, Don lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep-rooted love for his family and community.

A proud graduate of Eden High School's Class of 1963, Don was the epitome of the "All American Boy." His high school years were filled with achievement and leadership: he was a four-year letterman in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Beyond athletics, he was an active member of the FFA and the Quiz Team, served as a class officer, and earned the titles of Best in Class and Best All 'Round student-testaments to his well-rounded excellence and character.

Shortly after graduation, Don answered the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1963 and served honorably until 1966. Rising to the rank of E5 Sergeant, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service during a pivotal time in American history.

Following his military service, Don built a successful career at LTV Corporation where he worked in management until his retirement. His professional life reflected the same integrity and diligence that defined every aspect of who he was.

Don had a lifelong passion for classic cars. He found joy in restoring them to their former glory and attending car shows where he could share that passion with others. One of his greatest pleasures was collecting diecast model cars with his son Craig-a shared hobby that created lasting memories between father and son.

He held a steadfast belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of the Most High God. In his final days, Don found comfort knowing he would soon be reunited with loved ones who had gone before him-his parents Noil and Mary Whitaker; and his brothers Edward (EH) & wife Necia Gossett Whitaker, Ernest Whitaker, and David Carl Whitaker & wife Barbara McMillin Whitaker.

Don is survived by his wife Nancy Whitaker; his son Donald Craig Whitaker; his sister Estelle Wheeler; as well as many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and humility.

Though Don battled an aggressive cancer that went undetected due to his selfless concern for others' well-being over his own health, he faced it with quiet strength. Honoring the wishes of his wife-no formal service was held. He was laid to rest on the day of his passing at Eden Cemetery beside members of his cherished family. His burial took place not far from the home where he lived for three decades, sadly with not but his son and niece in attendance to bid him farewell. He cherished Eden, the town that shaped him and which he held dear throughout his life.

Don Whitaker will be remembered as an honorable man whose life spoke volumes through action rather than words. May those who knew him find peace in remembering a life so humbly yet profoundly lived.
