Clyde Butter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2013.
CLYDE R. BUTTER, SR.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith"
Clyde R. Butter Sr. died Sunday February 24, 2013 at MCH after a lengthy illness. He was born in Sheldon, Texas on September 20, 1930 and educated in Humble, Texas and at the University of Houston. While a college student, Mr. Butter discovered his love of broadcasting with a brief position at a local radio station. Mr. Butter served our country in the Navy during the Korean War, and following his service, began his broadcasting career in earnest. Over the course of his career, Clyde Butter became a radio, television, and stage personality who owned and managed local radio station KRIL. In addition, Mr. Butter was a prolific writer who authored and had published four books after being diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
He was an active follower of politics and an avid participant on state and local levels. In the early 1960's, he ran for the Texas House of Representatives. Later, Clyde ran for Reader for the Texas House of Representatives, and he was selected by unanimous vote of the House members. As a pioneer and innovator in radio broadcasting, while in Austin he founded Capital Broadcast News, the first broadcast news service in the Texas state capital. At KRIL, Clyde interviewed local and state politicians. He authored national stories for CBS News and appeared on national television broadcasts such as "60 Minutes".
Mr. Butter was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Ethel Butter. From his father, he acquired a love for the outdoors, building, and working with his hands. His school teacher mother taught Clyde an appreciation for classical literature and the arts. Also preceding him in death were beloved pets Newshound and Chickie from whom he learned about survival and zest for living regardless of the obstacles and that love comes in many forms.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 23 years, Charlene Butter, of Odessa, Texas; four sons: Dr. Donovan Butter and fiancée Rita Bell of Cibolo, Texas; Minister/ Missionary Michael Butter of Pensacola, Florida; Reverend Clyde R. Butter Jr. and wife Susie of Pleasanton, Texas; Michael Cameron and wife Amber of Montgomery, Alabama; two brothers: Donovan Butter and wife Sylvia of Houston, Texas; James Robert "Bob" Butter and wife Carol Ann of Fayetteville, Arkansas; seven grandchildren: Matthew, Haley, Valerie, Andrea, and Natalie Butter, Chris Holman, Lillian Beatrice Cameron; nine great-grandchildren: Andrew, Aaron, and Ava Butter; Hallie, Jacob, and Caleb Bates; Christopher and Riley Holman; Lily Huth; and feline companion Mei.
The family would like to give thanks to the advertisers, listeners, and fans of KRIL Radio Station, purchasers of Clyde's books, Dr. Abdul Kadir, the Veterans Administration System, Dr. Kaczor, Dr. George, and the staff of West Texas Cancer Center, West Texas Parkinson's Association, West Texas Writers, Nurses Unlimited Staff, all those who visited Clyde, and all friends from the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord.
Visitation will begin at noon Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord. Memorial services follow at 1:00 PM with Dr. Jimmy Braswell, Pastor Fred Jensen and Pastor Larry Hood officiating. Internment will occur at a later date at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Butter...Phil Fouche is in China but I did notify him of Clyde's passing. He asked that I convey his deepest sympathy and "how much I liked Clyde...and respected him and how much I enjoyed his visits. Odessa has lost a radio pioneer..." a quote from Phil's email to me.
I have worked for Phil since 1986 and also enjoyed your husband's visits to Quatro .... he was a special man and will be missed by all of us.

Clyde was more than a brother-in-law to my husband Carl and me; he was our wonderful friend. When we visited he and Charlene, we loved to sit and listen to his many wonderful stories. In return, he enjoyed listening to Carl's stories. He was always kind, loving to us and made us feel welcome. Clyde, we will miss you, but one day we will meet again in heaven and enjoy together your prize-winning corn bread. So long for now, our friend, until we meet again.

Clyde, I called ya Dad, cause you were Dad, it seemed right cause my father was Daddy, oh how I've grown to love ya over the years. We've had some great times, some polically motivated discussions(aka disagreements)- we could never just agree to disagree. Most of all i remember so many great times visiting you. You made me laugh, and smile, but until you died you never made me cry. You were and your memory will always be so very special to me. I miss ya sir, you were so strong, so determined, so wonderful. I use to tell you when you were sick to be tough, cause I knew you were, you were tougher than most, you amazed us all with your strenght. I could'nt have asked to know a better person. Say hi to my Daddy in heaven. I will miss you forever. From the day I met you -you made me family and I so loved seeing you and Donovan become so very close; he's hurting, but you know I'll take good care of him. I love you and miss you. See ya in heaven one day.

I only knew Clyde through his books and the stories Donovan and Rita shared of their time and visits with him. He seemed to be a most unusually talented man who loved his family and friends and loved to share his stories of life through his writings. I will treasure his books forever. To Donovan, Rita, Charlene and all the Butter family I send my most heartfelt sympathy, my prayers and the hope that good memories will fill your hearts and ease those sad thoughts. Clyde's legacy will carry on through each of you. May God cover you with his grace and loving care. Regina Bell Miller

Way back in the 1970's. Clyde and I shared a lunch and old times. I will always remember him and his kindness to me as a single young 30 year old. I thought I was pretty cute, but I have no idea what he thought of me as his younger cousin. He knew how to get in touch with me through his mom. I stayed in touch with Aunt Ethel fairly regularly back then. All of the Butter family from Humble were so loving and kind always. Bette Butter Brinson
