Clyde Long Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 4, 2025.
Lt. Colonel Clyde Lowell Long, Jr., age 76, passed away on August 1, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A proud native of Roswell, New Mexico, he was born there on March 22, 1949.

Clyde's life was marked by a deep commitment to service and education. After graduating from Roswell High School in 1967, he pursued higher education with determination and distinction. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in Roswell in 1996 and held multiple advanced degrees: a degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1972, a Master of Arts in Management from Webster University in St. Louis in 1988, and a Master of Military Science from Leavenworth, Kansas in 1989.

His distinguished military career spanned over two decades. Serving in the United States Army from June 1972 to June 1993, Clyde rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant Colonel. He commanded at every grade from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel and served with honor across various assignments including Recruiting Command. Notably, he also served as Professor of Military Science at James Madison University-an appointment that reflected both his leadership and academic acumen.

Following his retirement from the military, Clyde continued to serve others through education. He spent seven years as an elementary school teacher, bringing his dedication and discipline into the classroom to inspire young minds.

Clyde will be remembered by those who knew him as witty, loving, and strong-a man whose presence left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Virginia "Genny". His children Jonathon Long, NY, Melinda Lichtenwalter, Georgetown, Tx, Michael A Long, Rio Rancho, NM. Stepchildren, Brandi Stevens, Dallas, TX, Jeff Stevens and wife Jeanette, Georgetown, Tx. Twelve Grandchildren. Sisters Carol Cooper and Meryl Kettler, and his brother Glen Long. He was preceded in death by his father Clyde Lowell Long and mother Anna Knowles Long.

A memorial service honoring Clyde's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SENM Veterans Transportation in Roswell, New Mexico senmvt.com-a cause close to Clyde's heart.
