Clyde Nolan Thompson, 78, passed away at his home on July 31, 2015. Born in Delhi, LA on April 25, 1937, he was the first of six siblings born to Frances Nolan Thompson and Clyde Coleman Thompson, Jr. Clyde graduated from Delhi High School and continued his education at Louisiana Tech University where he was a multi-sport athlete. Clyde held Louisiana Tech's record for most stolen bases for nearly twenty years. He also played as the university's football quarterback. After receiving his doctorate degree from University of Southern Mississippi, Clyde spent the next fifteen years as an educator and a coach. He taught and coached at several high schools before becoming a professor and a coach at Louisiana Tech. In 1975, Clyde entered into public service as the District VIII Drug Education Coordinator for the State Department of Education, State of Louisiana. He went on to become a special assistant to the Superintendent of Education. In 1980, Governor Dave Treen appointed Clyde Deputy Secretary of the Department of Transportation. After serving in this capacity he became the Assistant to the President of the Board of Education. He remained in this position for several years before retirement. Clyde then moved back to his hometown and accepted the directorship at the Madison Parish Port where he served for over twenty years until his second retirement in 2014. Memorial services for Clyde will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Delhi United Methodist Church with Rev. William "Wishy" Nolan and Rev. Ted Fine officiating. Visitation will be held at Delhi United Methodist Church on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. A reception will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following services in celebration of Clyde's life. Clyde is preceded in death by his parents: Clyde Coleman Thompson, Jr. and Frances Nolan Thompson. He is survived by his wife Cheryl Strain Thompson of Delhi; two daughters Donna Axmacher and husband David of Castle Rock, CO; Deborah Eades and husband David of Franklin, TN; five siblings Robert Dhu Thompson, Francis Coleman Thompson, Michael Lanier Thompson, Dr. William David Thompson, and Priscilla Jo Linder. Clyde is also survived by two step-daughters; Dena Gielen and husband Chad; Deidre Ardoin and husband Ron. Clyde, or "Pop" has nine grandchildren: Sophie and Laney Axmacher; Zachary, Madison, and McKinley Eades; Emma and Daniel Gielen; Chelsey Marshall; and Mallory Clarke. Three great-grandchildren; Roland Eades; Cooper Daniel; and Gavin and Owen Marshall. Clyde also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. Always an animal lover, Clyde leaves behind his buddy, Jake, and many feline friends. The family requests that any memorials may be made to St. Jude's Hospital. I am sorry to hear about the passing of Coach Thompson. I played football on the Crowville team of 1962-1963, when he was our head coach, and I have never forgotten him.
