Cody Simmons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2025.
Cody Alexander "Coco" Simmons, age 2, passed away on April 23, 2025 at Boston Children's Hospital due to complications from Pulmonary Hypertension.

Born on February 25, 2023, in Portland, Maine, Cody brought immeasurable joy and love into the world during his short but profoundly impactful life. Affectionately known as "Coco" and "Cody-kins," he was a radiant light to all who knew him-family, friends, caregivers, and even strangers who came to know his story.

Though his time on Earth was brief, Cody's spirit was boundless. During extended hospital stays at Boston Children's Hospital, and Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in Portland, he became a beloved figure among staff. Nurses would eagerly sign up for shifts just to spend time with him. Despite the challenges he faced-including being unable to speak due to a breathing tube-Cody communicated with remarkable clarity through sign language. He not only learned signs quickly but created his own, blending words like "friend" and "family" into heartfelt expressions that captured his infinite love for those around him. One of his most frequent requests was for "more family please."

Cody's happiest moments were spent at home after returning in October 2024. There, he thrived in the loving care of his Momma and Daddy. He delighted in listening to music played by his father, reading stories with his mother, playing with his toys, his favorite barn, and making joyful noise with his own instruments. He constantly signed "I love you" to his parents-a gesture that became a daily reminder of the deep bond they shared.

His warmth extended far beyond the walls of his home or hospital room. Cody became a symbol of hope and resilience throughout New England and beyond. His bright smile graced social media posts for Boston Children's Hospital, appeared on tabletop ads in restaurants, and even adorned large banners at Boston's Prudential Center. His story was featured twice on Channel 6 News in Maine, capturing hearts across the region.

Through a dedicated social media group followed by hundreds, Cody inspired countless individuals-many of whom never met him in person. Communities rallied around him with fundraising events held across New England and donations pouring in from across the U.S. and abroad. His story united people in compassion and support.

Cody had an extraordinary ability to teach others simply by being himself. His calm demeanor during complex medical procedures amazed even seasoned healthcare professionals. His cheerful nature never wavered; he radiated love so freely that everyone who encountered him felt it deeply. In every sense of the word, Cody was a teacher-a tiny soul whose lessons in courage, joy, resilience, and unconditional love will endure.

Cody is lovingly remembered by his parents, Ben and Taryn Simmons of Standish; his grandparents Jan and Scott Condon of Bridgton, Joe and Vickie LeBlanc of Standish; and Jack and Marylee Simmons of Sidney. He is also survived by his Aunt and Uncle Jessica and Robert LeBlanc, and cousins Eve and Michael of Newburyport, Massachusetts; Aunt and Uncle Tracie and David Peterson, and cousins Araia and Brielle of Casco; Aunt Michelle Ward and partner Kurt Gowell of Litchfield, and cousins Kelsey, Billy and Kaitlin Reed; Aunt Kathleen Storm, and cousins Heather, Melissa and Kimberly Storm of Raynham, Massachusetts. Cody leaves behind numerous great aunts, uncles, second cousins, and extended family members throughout New England who cherished him deeply.

Cody was predeceased by his grandmother Maureen Harmon of Norway, his uncle John Storm of Raynham, Massachusetts, and uncle Mark Ward of Oxford, whose memories remain close to the hearts of those who loved Cody.

A celebration of life will be held at a time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in Portland, or Boston Children's Hospital in Cody's memory.

Though Cody's life was brief in years, it was vast in meaning. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him-and may the love he gave so freely continue to shine through those he touched.
