After a long illness, Cole Robert Marshall, 9, bravely fought his final battle on Aug. 25, 2006.
Born in Simi Valley, Cole was a stellar student at Katherine Elementary School, where he loved to read, play handball and laugh with his friends. He had a special love for his many pets, music and for playing baseball, Hot Wheels and Legos with his pals. Cole had an inspiring enthusiasm for life and continued to live strong and play hard, even throughout his illness. He took great pleasure and pride in practicing tae kwon doe and competed this past April in the International Tae Kwon Do Alliance West Coast Championships, placing first in green belt forms.
Cole was truly a faith-filled young man. Everyone who knew Cole was inspired by his courage and perseverance throughout his illness. Cole's strength was not his own but came from a deep love of God. He loved to go to church and sing praise songs and listen to Bible stories read to him by his Grandma Jan. He was an example of grace and strength to us all.
Cole is survived by his parents, Sterling A. Marshall and Lisa Ritts Marshall of Simi Valley; sister, Crystal; grandparents Warren and Dianne Marshall of San Diego; and grandmother Janet Ritts of Simi Valley.
He joins his Grandpa Edward E. Ritts in heaven.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Simi Covenant Church, 4680 Alamo St., Simi Valley.
Memorial donations may be made to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, www.mhf.org or Simi Covenant Church, www.simicovenant.org.
Arrangements are under the direction of Valley Oaks-Griffin Mortuary, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westalke Village; phone 1-818-889-0902.

To the Marshall Family,
Although Cole's time on earth was brief, he had a profound impact on everyone that had the opportunity to meet him. This is especially true for us as our son Taylor was one of Cole's close friends. We will all miss him terribly. Our thought and prayers are with you.

We know the courageous fight Cole fought for so long. He was the victor in the end for he enjoyed life to the very end. His love for God was never unfailing. May we all have the bravery and love of God this child had.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My family's heart, strength and prayers go out to Cole's family and friends. Although I did not know him, he was spoken about very highly by his aunt. An aunt so very proud of her smart, happy, and courageous nephew!
When you feel soft cool breezes and tender warm air touch your body and soul...
Know that those are smiles, hugs and kisses from a sweet boy named Cole.
