I was Cole's battalion commander in Afghanistan. He was a great Marine and an even better man... a skilled, compassionate and courageous leader... someone I trusted implicitly. I am heartbroken at his loss, praying for the family he loved, and will be there at Arlington on the 21st. Semper Fidelis.

I was Cole's eighth grade teacher and haven't seen him since then. However, even at a young age, Cole was a kind and caring leader. He wrote me a card when he graduated, which I still have. He forever changed me as a teacher and my heart breaks for him and his family.

My only Son Brannon Harnacke served in afghanistan on the sniper team of which Cole was team leader . I know how much my son loved and admired him. I met him the early morning they returned from that deployment in november 2009. I am so very sad at the loss of this good man and Marine.I offer my deepest sympathy and condolence to the family , though there are no words .I am a former United States Marine as well and I know , as all Marines do, that this is only the beginning of an eternal tour of duty guarding the streets of Heaven. Sgt. VanDorn was extracted early for duty because good men are needed by the Supreme Commandant. God Bless and keep and SEMPER FIDELIS Brother, walk your post in peace, carry on. James J. Harnacke , Lincoln Il.
