Coleen passed away at Foothills Country Hospice with her husband of 50 years by her side. Coleen was born in Calgary to Kathleen and Terence Cairns and grew up in Granum, Alberta. She was a graduate of Granum High School. Coleen had a keen musical talent and became a fine pianist and organist. She played for services at Granum United Church as a teenage girl before moving to Calgary at age 17 to attend secretarial school. She enjoyed a nearly 50 year career as a legal secretary. She was a dedicated employee and made deep friendships while working for several large firms. Coleen and Wallace were married on December 27, 1965. She became the organist at Lakeview United Church in Calgary in 1972, playing for services as well as many weddings and funerals until 1996. She also served as the choir director and the annual Christmas concert was the highlight of her year. She was more recently an active member of Scarboro United Church in Calgary, where she enjoyed singing with the choir. Coleen was a treasured friend, companion and caregiver to multiple relatives and friends in their final years. She made friends easily, loved entertaining and being with family and friends. One of her greatest joys was being Nana to her granddaughter Stella. She is survived by her loving husband, Wallace; her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Kathi Wiebe of Apple Valley, MN; her daughter and son-in- law, Rebecca and Dean Chynoweth of San Antonio, TX; her granddaughter, Stella Chynoweth; her five step-grandchildren and four great-step-grandchildren; her brother, Michael Cairns; and by her nephews and nieces, Paul and Jennifer Cairns, Jonathan Cairns, and Terence and Brittany Cairns. The family is especially grateful to the incredible nurses, staff, doctors and volunteers at the Foothills Country Hospice Society for the wonderful care they gave Coleen in the final stage of her life. A Memorial Service will be held at Scarboro United Church at 134 Scarboro Avenue S.W. in Calgary, on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
