COONEY, Colleen Peacefully at home, Sunday morning October 23, 2005 after an extended battle with Breast Cancer, age 37. Precious daughter of Leo & Camie (O'Reilly) Cooney. Sister of devoted caring brother Kevin. Survived by her god parents Aunt Doreen (Cooney), Uncle Bob Fairbairn, Aunt Karen & Phil O'Reilly (deceased), Rev. Sister Doris Cooney (G.S.I.C.) and many cousins. Colleen spent her career caring for others; she was a dedicated team member of the Ottawa CNIB (Deaf, Blind Services). Her focus was always seeking ways to help empower the many clients that she serviced over the years. The family will forever be thankful to her many friends that helped her enjoy life to the fullest and a very special thanks to a very close team of friends Maureen, Karen, Christine, Rachel, Marg and Carolyn that spent endless hours with her during the cancer cycle (from attending medical appointments to hours of home care support during a time when friends are needed most.) The family would also like to extend thanks to the medical team that worked with care to treat and deal with this illness Dr Edirisinghe, Dr Lochrin, Dr Gertler and her prime VON RN Cathy plus the many RNs and support staff at the Ottawa Hospital, Cancer Clinic and the Home Care teams from the VON during this long and painful battle. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home 580 Eagleson Road, Kanata Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Wednesday to Our Lady of Fatima Church for Mass of Christian Funeral at 10 a.m., with reception to follow in the church hall. Interment at St. Isidore's Cemetery, Kanata at a later date. In memoriam donations to CNIB (Deaf Blind Services) Ottawa, Palliative Care Outreach Program and the VON Ottawa Carleton Branch.

I am so very sorry to hear of Colleen's passing. I remember phoning her when I first learned of her breast cancer, as I could relate being a breast cancer survivor myself. I will always remember Colleen for our line dancing days at City Slickers, Smokin' Gunn & Straits and also watching her up clogging and having such a good time. She was truly a wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

My best regards to the family.

I have known Coleen for about 15 years. She used to come out to see my band and she used to teach me some sign language. She always seemed to have a positive attitude and had a great spirit. She loved her job and we will all miss her dearly.

Dear Camie, Leo and Kevin.

I was so saddened to hear of Colleen's death. I recall, seeing her daily at school, watching her grow from a sweet little girl to an even sweeter young lady with the most wonderful smile. I am not surprised that she grew to become a loving, caring adult. Our prayers are with you all at this time.

To my beautiful friend and fellow literacy instructor! I miss you! I feel so fortunate to have worked with you over the last 10 years. Our visits at GOLD conferences were always so much fun and way too short. You always had a new piece of silver jewelry that you would purchase at the airport and you were always so excited to show me. Then our catch up time would begin. I know the clients admired you so much! Your attitude and respect for them did not go unnoticed. Every week I read this poem, and I know it will have a new meaning to me as I relate it to you and your courageous life. It begins....

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time. Enjoying one moment at a time. Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace. Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is not as I would have it, Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will. So that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next." Amen

I am seeking that serenity and comfort right now. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family!

If I had to describe Colleen in one word it would be "lovely". Colleen was the type of person who you felt that you knew for a lifetime even though you may have just met. Colleen truly was a gift.

Kevin and Family,

Colleen was a beautiful person inside and outside. She was truly a caring person, a trait I truly admired. I will always have fond memories of going line dancing and hanging out together at Country Time Donuts. I've always appreciated her making that long journey for my wedding, not very many people would do that, but that was Colleen. She will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Christine
