Connie Ficklin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 24, 2009.
Ficklin, Connie Leal Bates age 61, of Coon Rapids, MN. died on August 22, 2009 of ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband John, sons Ian and Benjamin, granddaughter Kristen, daughter-in-love Amanda Meyer, sister Ann Scott, and brother Frank Bates. She remained positive yet realistic in the face of illness and refused to live a diminished life. She worked, travelled, wined, dined and drove many personal and professional projects to completion. She entertained frequently, opening her heart, home and fantastic cooking to friends and loved ones. Her wit, and intellect intact, Connie collaborated openly and honestly with her extended medical team, ensuring that her final life experience contributed to the body of knowledge about cancer. Connie will be cremated and a memorial will be held at the Methven- Taylor Funeral Chapel, 850 E. Main Street, Anoka, MN from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on Tuesday, August 25, 2009. In lieu of flowers, we request you send donations to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice organization of your choice. www.methven-taylor.com Anoka Chapel 763-421-9393

John and family,
I was a year behind Connie at the Pi Phi house at KSU. I had not heard from her in a while, but do have some terrific memories of times at the house. She seemed to have a knack for doing well in school while enjoying each moment, too. I always wanted to have her zest for life.
I know she will be greatly missed, but really will be with you always.
Best blessings to you all.

Dear John and family, I read today of Connie's passing in the KSU Alumni magazine. My heart goes out to you in your tremendous loss. Connie and I were roommates for a time at KSU in the sorority house, but we lost touch in the years following. I admired her tremendously. Blessings to you and your family.

John and family, I'm sorry to hear of Connie's passing. I've not seen nor heard from Connie in 15 years with the expception of our yearly Christmas card. When I did not recieve it this year, I thought back to her story last year and did an onlline search only to discover the news. Altough I did not know her well, while my husband was passing in 1995, Connie steped in as a hospice volunteer and weekly came to my home and entertained my two children. She was amazing. I will always be grateful for her unselflessness and her willingness to give time to help me when we needed it most. Again, I'm sorry to learn of your loss.

John and boys, Connie opened her heart and her home to me many times, always without conditions. I am forever grateful for having the pure privilege of knowing her for 30 years and one month to the day. I remember the day because it changed my life. She will be often on my mind and forever in my heart. May God bless you and keep you. Neacimo.

Dear John, You don't know me, but my Mother-Sabena Clearman-is your Mother's sister. So we are cousins. We were very saddened by both Connie's & Eliabeth's passing. Your Mom & I had had many wonderful phone conversations over the years, & I always felt very close to her. Your visits with my folks made them very happy. We send you loving thoughts & wishes for strength as time passes. If you ever come to the Bay area, please get in touch with me. I live just north of the G.G. Bridge in Marin. Susan & I keep in touch, so she has all the addresses/numbers-email,phone,etc. Our best wishes to you, Sabra Valdick & Sabena Clearman

Ben and family:

I am very sorry to read of your loss. After losing my father unexpectedly four year ago, I can sympathize with what you may be feeling. Too often during a time like this, your friends and family don't know what to say to make you feel any better. Just know that whatever anyone tries to say to you, they only intend the very best in this time of sorrow and they truly care.

I hope God blesses you and your family as He takes your mother into his keeping.

Your colleague and friend,

John and family, Paula and I add to the thoughtful comments and prayers already expressed by so many of your family and friends. My mother succumbed to the same illness at the age of 51 - it is truly a tragic and cruel process, and I know that Connie endured it with exceptional courage. I also believe that she wanted you and your family to continue living your lives to the fullest, taking her example as your own. Although difficult, there can be no better testimony to her courage than your own continued dedication to the betterment of human life in this world. We will remember her by supplementing our annual donation to the American Cancer Society.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
