Conrad Hickok Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2025.
Conrad Dale Hickok, 38, of New Bedford, died on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a brief but intense battle with stomach cancer.

Born in New Bedford, Conrad was a life-long resident of the city. He attended Sgt. William H. Carney Academy, Keith Junior High School, and was a 2005 graduate of New Bedford High School. He had most recently been employed by A. Walecka & Son moving company as a mover and truck driver.

Prior to his work as a mover, Conrad worked as a cook at several locations, most notably at the Wamsutta Club. He had honed his cooking skills while serving as the primary caregiver to his mother, Maeve Hickok, until her death in 2012. He also cared for his grandfather until his death in 2020. The youngest of seven children, Conrad was a music lover, a puzzle solver, an adventurous eater, and a brilliant lifetime learner with a ready smile and an open heart.

He is survived by his great loves, wife Whitney Gemaly Hickok, who was his life partner for 15 years, and daughter Lennon Rhodes Hickok; his father Ralph (Diane Bolton) Hickok of New Bedford; four older sisters, Holly Hickok-Kearns of Robinson, Illinois, Stephanie (Ed Campbell) Hickok of Greer, South Carolina, Deirdre (John) Bridge of Derry, New Hampshire, and Colette Hickok of New Bedford; two older brothers, Evan (Emily) Hickok of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Daniel Hickok of Manchester, Connecticut; father-in-law Michael (Lisa) Gemaly of West Wareham; sisters-in-law Amanda Leonesio of Southington, Connecticut and Lindsey Gemaly of New Bedford; nieces and nephews, Kendra Tohill, Ross and Devin Kearns, Sarah Jane Theune, Sage Hickok, Jared, Aidan and Annika Bridge, Violet and Alice Hickok, Chloe, Leah and Owen Bennett, Liliana Fernandes, and Aibhlin Hickok; great-nieces Emily and Charlotte Tohill; and cousins Ginny Sanders, Jane Wisneski, Christopher Denil, Nicole Denil, Matthew Gonzales, and Steven Sanders. He was predeceased by his mother, Maeve Elkin Hickok; and by his grandparents, David and Dorothea Elkin, Mildred and Alfred Maes, and Donald Hickok.

The family would like to thank Beth Israel's ICU and Oncology Units for the expert medical care and compassion Conrad received, in particular the members of the nursing staff, who were unsurpassed in the quality of care they offered. If you are able, please consider donating blood to your local hospital's blood bank as Conrad had required scores of generous donors in the last weeks of his life.

Following cremation, a gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday 30 July 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Society of Senhor da Pedra, 81 Tinkham Street, New Bedford. The family is deeply grateful to the Society for generously donating their space.

I am at a loss for words. Conrad was so much more than a friend. He was the smartest person I've known and yet, would never make anyone feel like less. He was the big brother I never had and he always made sure that I felt like family. I am so sorry, Whitney and Lennon.

I didn't know Conrad as well as I would have liked due to living a distance away all of our lives. When I saw him though, I was always struck by the kindness and love emanating from him. I have also dubbed him "The best hugger in the family" :). My favorite quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson - "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or redeemed social condition; to know even one life breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have Succeeded" Conrad Dale, YOU mattered and your legacy will never be forgotten. Much love to Whitney and Lennon and all the Hickoks.

As a long time friend of Owen Bennett, I attended family gatherings at every opportunity. Conrad was the sweetest man I have ever met, and I´ve held great respect for him over the years. Owen and I knew that if Conrad was there, we´d have a great time. I thank him for his generosity and wisdom, and am so grateful to have met a man with so much compassion.
