CONRAD PLEMEL Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jan. 3 to Jan. 5, 2012.
Conrad Plemel April 12, 1912 January 01, 2012 After a long and rewarding life, Conrad Leonard Plemel, formerly of St. Gregor, died at Saskatoon City Hospital in the early hours of New Year's Day, 2012, getting his wish for a peek at his 100th year. He was 99 years old. Conrad was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Marie (nee Wegmann) Plemel in 2006; his parents; and his siblings: Katherine (Sr. Veronica Plemel, OSU), Alois, Andrew, John, Rose, Leo and Carl. This special Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his children, Don, Ben (Vivian), Harry (Carole), Vera (Bruce) Taylor, Jim (Lorna), Joan (Rick) Dixon, and Gladys (David) Coombes; and 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Cecilia Cook, Agnes Montgomery, and Dorothy Neuses; his brother, Martin Plemel; as well as many nieces and nephews. Conrad was born on April 12, 1912, on the family homestead near St. Gregor, SK. He was the third of 12 children born to Martin and Christina (nee Meschishnick) Plemel. Conrad attended elementary school in St. Gregor and high school at St. Peter's College, Muenster. After working various jobs during the depression years, he gained full-time employment with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 1940. What he called his first real job enabled him to marry his sweetheart, Marie Wegmann, in October of that year. Except for his four years of service with the RCAF from 1942 to 1946, this same job was the start of a long career in the co-operative field, first as a grain buyer in Lake Lenore and St. Gregor, and later as Credit Union Manager in St. Gregor. His commitment to the co-operative model was well-suited to his belief in the importance of service to others. Family was central to the lives of Conrad and Marie. In addition to their own children, at different times over the years, both of their fathers, as well as Marie's brother lived with them. There was always a warm welcome and a bed, if necessary, for relatives and friends alike. Conrad was dedicated to his church and the Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, receiving his 50 year certificate in 2007. Con was a long-time parishioner and active supporter of St. Gregor Parish where he served in many capacities. He possessed a strong faith, confident that God's plan, whatever it might be, is more important than our own. His commitment to community is another example of his belief in the importance of service. During his years in St. Gregor, Conrad was active on many committees, boards and clubs, including involvement in minor ball when the family was young and, later, as a senior, holding office with the New Horizons Club, as well as many other activities during the intervening years. He enjoyed many hours in his workshop and his creations in wood will always be family treasures. Dad's sincere belief that people are fundamentally good is his legacy to us. He walked the walk by helping out people whom others had given up on. We can only hope to live this belief to the same degree. The family wishes to thank Dad's many caregivers, including Dr. Huber, Dr. Classen (and the staff at Lakeside Medical Clinic), Dr. Baldelli, the staff at Columbian Manor, at Cedar Gardens Care Home, and at Veterans' Village in Sherbrooke Community Centre. Special thanks to the people at Saskatoon City Hospital for the care and compassion they provided during Dad's final days. The Prayer Service for Con will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., presided by Glenn Taphorn, and the Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., concelebrated by Fr. Darryl Millette and Fr. Rudolph Novecosky, OSB. Both services will be held at St. Gregory R.C. Church, St. Gregor. Interment will follow at St. Gregory R.C. Cemetery, St. Gregor. Memorial donations may be directed to either the St. Gregor Parish Memorial Fund or to St. Peter's Abbey. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK. (306-682-4114)

Dear Jim, Lorna, Martin, David and Ellen.
As you near the anniversary of your dear Father's and Grandfather's passing and face this first Christmas season without him may your very special memories help you through this time.
Jim, although we didn't know your father, Conrad, from reading about him we know what a remarkable gentleman he was and the world is a better place because of his life and contributions here on earth.

Good morning, Dad. Today would have been your 100th birthday. A part of us wishes you could be here so we could celebrate and sing happy birthday to you in person -- we miss hearing your voice, your laugh, and we miss receiving the good advice you always had for us, whenever we needed help with something, but we know you're in a better place where you're free of any pain. Thanks for all you and Mom did for your family. We will be forever grateful. We miss you and often think about both you and Mom. Tonight, we'll raise a glass and offer a toast in memory of you and Mom -- of course it will be a combination of Forty Creek Rye and Southern Comfort. Rest in peace, Dad. We love you.

Vera, Bruce & Plemel family. We are so sorry to hear about your dad's passing but so enlightened to have known such a wonderful man. He and your mother were both people that we should all aspire to be. I will remember the long talks about numerous topics at your house. A life so well lived! Prayers to all the family.

What a wonderful life to have lived. My memories of Con began in Lake Lenore when he and Marie were newly weds. Later I taught at Arras school and lived with the Yungmann family and again met Con and Marie. His sister, Mother Veronica, was my Grade one teacher and a big reason for my loving school and becoming a teacher.

Just a note to let you know you have been in our thoughts. Elsbeth(Beth) and I would like to offer you our sincere condolences with the passing away of your father, a highly respected gentleman. We are so glad we had the privilege of knowing both your parents.
Ben and I were both in business in the bustling town of St. Gregor in the early sixties. I specifically remember the time the two of us decided to unload a carload of coal for extra income.
I pleasantly remember being a board member of the Credit Union of which Conrad was the manager. We are honoured to have in our possession a wooden bowl which he made. Beth's mom bought it at the local craft sale.

We were one of the first to be hosted at Marie and Con's house when Henry and I went to Catechism by horse and wagon in 1943. What a treasure those times with them were!! also, when teaching at St.Gregor they would be always ready to call you over for a visit. I thought they were saints all along!

Uncle Conrad will always be remembered fondly by many of us. His kind spirit, wise words and generosity was something we should try to model our own lives by as him and Aunt Marie were kind to everyone. We have many, many fond memories of Uncle Conrad, A particular highlight was our visit last summer, enjoying playing the accordion for him to sing along to several old favorite songs, and bringing smiles and giggles all around. He was very proud of being 99 1/2 years young, and so looing forward to 100! Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family, may you find peace in the wonderful examle set by Uncle Conrad.
