Corey Holmgren Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2019.
Corey Holmgren
1984 - 2019
Corey Comish Holmgren passed away unexpectedly while enjoying an outing with his family on January 19, 2019, leaving behind his amazing wife and three incredible children. They are expecting a fourth child in March. Corey served as a Chaplain (Capt.) in the Utah Army National Guard. In addition to his military service, he provided for his family by doing that which he loved, working for LifeStar Network as a Marriage and Family Therapist where he devoted his life to helping others. His most profound joy came from being a father and husband.
Corey was born in Tremonton, Utah to Lyle and Kathryn Holmgren on January 11, 1984. He graduated from Bear River High School in 2002 and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Florianopolis, Brazil. Corey attended Utah State University where he met and charmed Mindi Anderson while working together at Logan Deseret Industries. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Religious Studies with minors in Portuguese and Military Science and later earned double Master's degrees in Divinity and Marriage and Family Therapy from Amridge University. While at Utah State, Corey participated in the Army ROTC program which led to many years of service as a Chaplain to soldiers in need. As a therapist and Chaplain, Corey deeply impacted countless lives in some of their darkest moments. Since his passing, we have been blessed to better understand the depth his influence had on everyone he met through those who have reached out to share their experiences.
Corey is survived by his wife, Mindi; his four kids, Nathan, Nora, Lexie and Jack (entering the world in March); his parents, Lyle and Kathy Holmgren; his in-laws, Victor and Janice Anderson and their son, Parker; siblings, Justin (Natalie), Dallen (Ashley), Kierstin (Jacob), Hilari (Phillip); and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love him dearly. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wayne and June Holmgren and Leo and Afton Larsen.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 12 Noon at the Salt Lake Granger North Stake Center located at 3175 South 3450 West, West Valley City, Utah under the direction of Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary. Viewings will also be held at the Stake Center: Friday evening, January 25, 2019, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial: Valley View Memorial Park.

Captain Holmgren was a friend of mine. We served together in the 19th. I remember him both as someone who talked with me about serious things going on in my life with compassion and insight and as the only chaplain who had the guts to share himself, make himself vulnerable, in his attempts to get through to our company when he spoke to us as a group. He was awesome.

Corey,
Thank you for helping my child thru a difficult time in his life. Thru your counseling he began to see things in a new way and you helped me to be a better mom to him. We could tell that you truly cared about his well being. Our family has become closer in part to you. We are so happy our path's crossed. We pray that Heavenly Father will bring your family much needed love and comfort at this time.
