Corey O'Brien Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province on Dec. 5, 2006.

O'BRIEN _ Corey - It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of Corey on November 25th 2006. An artist, writer and musician, he was a warm and loving young man. Ambitious and creative at an early age Corey loved to learn and was excited about the world around him. Corey's Mom, Kate O'Brien and Grandmother Helen O'Brien, Stepdad Craig Davies and Uncles Ron, Gary, Rick and Len O'Brien and their families are heart broken and will carry the memory of Corey with them forever. Corey loved children and they loved this gentle, caring big guy who knew how to do everything they found fascinating. He had the rare combination of creativity and athletic prowess. As a skilled athlete he played soccer, baseball, rugby and tennis at a very accomplished level. Corey loved to snowboard, ski and was a bit of a dare-devil on his skateboard. He demonstrated a high level of achievement in his scholastic years as well, winning a national Skills Canada competition for animation while in high school. Corey's passion for animation led to a position at Electronic Arts and at seventeen years old was nominated for the Rookie of the Year award there. Sharing was as important to Corey as knowledge and he enjoyed teaching others. At fifteen he was teaching seniors how to navigate the internet, as an instructor for a Youth and the Net program. At eighteen he was instructing students in animation courses at Van Arts College. Corey was a joy to Kate, they enjoyed the happiest of times together while he was growing up in Moncton, Mission and Abbotsford. Their most joyous memories are at the cottage by the ocean in New Brunswick with Grandma, swimming at Cultus Lake and weekends skiing in B.C. in perfect powder. We have lost an amazing, bright young man and that is a tragedy but we were blessed with him in our lives for twenty five years and those memories can never be taken away from us. Kate would be grateful to receive cards to know you are remembering Corey, at 200 - 20408 Douglas Crescent, Langley V3A 4B4. In lieu of flowers a donation to the B.C. Schizophrenia Society in Corey's name would be appreciated. Kate invites all of Corey's friends and hers to a celebration of his life at the Cascades Convention Centre, 20393 Fraser Highway in Langley, on Wednesday, December 13th at 1:00pm.

This is very sad news. I worked with Corey at EA. He was an extremely talented, passionate young man with much to offer. In my memories he will always be that talented young man that I had the pleasure to know. My heart goes out to you Corey. I hope that you are in a happier place. Rest in peace.

I will always remember Corey's sunny nature. He was a fantastic animator but more importantly, he was a great young man. I know there is little I can say that will assauge your grief, but I hope that by knowing he touched so many, you will know that you are not alone. My deepest condolences on your loss.

My heart aches knowing that Corey is now longer with us. I was lucky enough to be a friend and neighbour to Corey during our years together in high school and I will never forget the memories. My deepest sympathies go out to Kate and her family during this difficult time. You will be sadly missed.

While I only knew Corey for a short time at Electronic Arts, I was struck by his talent, intelligence, athleticism, and the aura of ability that surrounded him. I remember watching one of his student projects and laughing really hard at one of the jokes, a rarity for me to see humor executed so well in a student-made animated short. The few times I was around him I got the feeling he could accomplish anything he wanted to. My heart is filled with sadness at Corey's passing, my thoughts are with him and his family. I am so sorry, we have lost such a special young man.

I knew Corey when he first started at EA in the motion capture department. I was amazed at how bright and enthusiastic Corey was from his very first day. I recall myself and other co-workers commenting on his amazing potential and passion, its something I'll never forget. My heart felt sympathies go out to Corey's family for your incredible loss, though I know his memory will live on.

To everyone who knew and loved Corey,

I'm so sad that Corey has passed away, he was a great guy and one of my best friends in high school. Him and I played rugby for Bateman, and worked on an animation project together, which was one of my fondest memories from back then.

I'll pray for him and his family in a special way this week, and I'm so sorry he was taken from this world so prematurely.

Sincerely,

Jeff Graham
