Cornelius Kelton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 23 to Sep. 24, 2021.
Cornelius Charles Kelton, peacefully departed his earthly life of grace at his home on Friday, September 17, 2021. He was born on June 18, 1961, to the late Christene (Warren) (Kelton) Savoy and the late Charles L. (Kelton) Swann of Charles County, Maryland. He was the fourth of nine children.

Cornelius grew up in Welcome, Maryland, and resided with his maternal grandparents, the late Laura E. and Yellie Y. Warren. Following his grandparents passing, he resided with his mother and stepfather, Russell Savoy, Sr. in Indian Head, Maryland. Cornelius received his education through Charles County Public Schools. At an early age, he gave this life to Christ and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church in Welcome, Maryland. Cornelius sang with Zion’s Junior Choir and “The Inspirational Singers” youth gospel group that ministered in song throughout the D.C. Metropolitan Area. He was employed as a landscaper with Joppa Maintenance at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, Maryland, and worked a number of years as a general building maintenance worker.

Cornelius enjoyed surrounding himself with family and friends and cooking on the grill. He had a passion for gardening and keeping his van detailed. His home landscaping and lawn were always immaculate, and he shared his skills with his neighbors. “Mr. Kelton”, as he was affectionately called by his wife, built a garden fountain with a waterfall for her. Cornelius was soft-spoken and the Lord blessed him with a humble spirit and meek mannerisms. He will be remembered for his ever-present smile.

In addition to his grandparents, mother and father, Cornelius is preceded in death by his brother, Russell “Snuke” Savoy, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory a dedicated and loving wife of 11 years, Yvonne (Knight) Kelton; her dearest daughters and beloved son, Cleorisa Knight, Janie Covington and David Covington; two grandchildren, Hunter Knight and Addison Flemmings; sisters, Charlotte Kelton, Cynthia Simms, C. Cecelia Kelton, and Louise (Pete) Harley; brothers, Carl “Wayne” Savoy, Sr., Donnell (Rena) Savoy, and Syvelle (William) Whitmer; nieces, Mahogany Llyes, Yolanda Savoy, Asha Kelton, Victoria Harley, Carlynia Savoy, and Candice Savoy; nephews, Carl (Dawn) Savoy Jr., Jarrell (Julie) Reeder, Victor Harley, Jr, and Ansuman Morning; three great-nieces; five great-nephews; aunts, Madeline Johnson and Annie Warren; uncle, Ralph Kelton; Stepfather, Russell Savoy, Sr.; and a host of other beloved cousins, family, and friends.

Family and friends will unite on Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 10:00am until time of service 11:00am at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home 2294 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, MD 20601. Interment will be private.

I am extending my deepest sympathy to the Kelton family. Cornelius was my cousin. Both of us were raised in the same household by our grandparents. He was a very mild mannered individual. I will remember Cornelius always greeting me with a big smile. Wonderful thoughts of him will linger in my heart forever. May he rest in Peace.
