Costas Arvanitis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2016.
Costas (Cos) George Arvanitis, 85, of Hyannis died at home on Monday, April 25, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late June Evelyn (Evans) Arvanitis.

Cos was born in Boston, MA to the late George and Mary (Eakovides) Arvanitis. At an early age, he moved to Hyannis with his parents and grandmother. He attended Barnstable schools and graduated from Barnstable High School in 1948. Following high school he attended Hebron Academy in Maine for a year then continued on to Tufts University. During this time he met June Evans, his future wife. In 1954 Cos and June were married and upon his graduation from Tufts that same year, Cos entered the Army and was stationed in Georgia. Cos was proud to have served his country and was a lifelong supporter of several Veterans organizations.

After discharge from the Army, Cos and June returned to New England, settling in Rhode Island where Cos began a long career in education. He was proud to be one of the founding teachers in the history department at Chariho Regional High School where he taught until 1966, only leaving Chariho to return to the Cape. Cos went on to teach at Dartmouth High School and eventually Dartmouth Middle School where he continued until his retirement in 1989. He loved teaching History and remembered his days at Chariho and Dartmouth fondly.

When Cos wasn't teaching, he was often found working at or running a restaurant. Cos spent much of his youth working at his family's restaurant, "The Blue Anchor." In 1981, Cos started, "The Black Gull" in Osterville. It was open during the summer months through the 80's until his retirement from teaching.

After retirement Cos and June would often travel out to California to visit three of their daughters. When the grandchildren started to arrive they were thrilled to be grandparents and enjoyed spending their time watching them grow.

As a long time Cape Codder, Cos worked at many local landmarks and enjoyed sharing stories to with his children and grandchildren about the various jobs he held while growing up in Hyannis. He would reminisce about his experiences working as a bellhop at the old Mayflower Hotel, the time he worked as an usher at the theatre on the west end of Main Street in Hyannis, and about the summer when he was thirteen and would caddy for Rose Kennedy while working at the Hyannisport Club. He had many wonderful stories to share and when his high school buddies would visit they would talk about the Hyannis they knew growing up and laugh recalling their antics.

Cos is predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years June Evelyn (Evans) Arvanitis. He is survived by his children: Julie of Dennis, Constance of San Diego, CA, Charles (Katherine) of Hyannis, MA, Krista of San Diego, CA and Leigh of San Diego, CA: his adored grandchildren Elizabeth, Leanne and Charlotte: his brothers Victor, Teddy and Chris as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends and Relatives are invited to attend visitation Friday, April 29 from 4pm to 7pm at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home 160 W. Main St. Hyannis, MA 02601 with prayer services at the end of visiting hours, Pastor John Holt of Osterville Methodist Church presiding. A gathering will take place Saturday April 30, 2016 between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with procession to Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit for an 11 a.m. Committal Service with Military Honors.

Your work family here in San Diego is thinking of you, Krista. We know how much you loved and respected your father . We're glad you've shared stories about him through the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family - and, indeed, we know the whole Cape community feels the loss.

I graduated from Chariho High School in 1965. I had Mr. Arvanitis for 4 years in high school. He was a wonderful teacher .I wasn't liking the subjects but "He" made it interesting with his stories.
For the past 50 years I have wondered what happened with this wonderful man. I was very sad when I went on line and read he has passed away. He was a important part of Chariho's teaching and will never be forgotten. I am truly sorry for your loss.
