Courtney Kampa Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 18, 2022.

“If grace could be defined it’d be a very quiet phrase.” By Courtney Kampa

Courtney Kampa, loving wife, beloved daughter and sister, is presumed to have passed peacefully in her sleep at her Nashville home on November 14th, 2022.

It will be impossible to recover from the loss of this uniquely talented, brilliant, funny, sensitive, independent styled beauty, whom God called home way too early.

Courtney grew up in a joyful home as the oldest of her four sisters. Rarely seen apart and known locally as the Kampa Girls, they were close in age and shared a love of ballet and musical theater, but most of all fun which they had often together.

A natural beauty, she was known for her grace, sarcasm, curious mind and sharp wit. She loved the ultra feminine, even from a young age. Toddling around in her Mother’s high heels when she could hardly walk, she would later pair this with a love of kimonos, head scarfs, bright colors and whimsical patterns. Her beauty was honest, something that just happened, and her style was truly all her own.

Courtney attended the University of Virginia where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Will Anderson. They dated later for three years and married in 2017. Throughout their marriage, they shared a love of simple things like Mexican food, word games, walks with their dogs, British crime dramas, visiting coffee shops and relaxing on the back porch talking, while their pups played in the backyard.

She went on to pursue a successful career in poetry after receiving her MFA from Columbia University. She was widely published and received numerous awards for her work including being selected by the National Book Award winner Mary Szybist for the New Issues Press First Book Award. Her book, Our Lady of Not Asking Why, was published in 2018 to critical and peer acclaim. She was also awarded the prestigious Stegnor Fellowship at Stanford University in 2017, where she wrote and studied for two years.

She loved teaching writing and loved her students. She was a professor of undergraduate writing at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Lipscomb University and Belmont University in Nashville, TN. She also held private workshops with post-grads who were interested in writing poetry. She worked with many of her students for years, and showed a fierce loyalty to helping them discover their own voice and writing style.

She could be found working on her own writing whilst surrounded by ceiling high piles of books, a pencil nested in her hair, and notes written on her hands sitting amidst a garden of indoor plants.

She had a kind, sensitive heart with a deep love for people and animals. She served her two rescue dogs Eddie and Georgie “puppychinos” daily and always cuddled them while she worked or relaxed.

She had a particular love and care for children, thoughtfully sending her nieces and nephews books in the mail, and often spoke of wanting her own children some day.

Courtney made anyone who crossed her path feel loved. She was loving and gentle with everyone she met, whether making friends with someone in the checkout line or by helping her students that she taught feel inspired and confident.

No one can ever fill the gaping hole that is left by our beautiful, strong, graceful, brilliant, and loving Courtney. We are devastated by the loss but can smile reading Courtney's previously published words, ”My stray blondes…stitching me to you, and you, holding out your hand…”, knowing that her presence will always be felt.

Courtney is survived by her husband Will Anderson, parents Joe and Kathleen Kampa, sisters Keenan (David), Meggie (Mattox), and Grace Kampa.

I discovered Courtney through her poem, "Avant Garde," in Rattle last week. What an astonishing talent, I thought, and immediately looked her up to learn that she had died. The discovery and the theft that occurred simultaneously has left me utterly bereft. Since that moment, I've done nothing but read her poems, read about her, scroll through her Instagram. Thank you for leaving it up. In these ways, she stays alive.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the news of Courtney. She was a beautiful soul and a true light and inspiration to me and so many others. Her free spirit, constant smile and bubbly personality was so warming, and she was a true blessing in this world to everyone that knew her. Sending prayers and love to the Kampa's and her husband. She is truly missed.

I am so so saddened to hear of Courtney's passing. She was a lovely, bright, beautiful person inside and out, and had somany talents. I will always rememberher as a young ballet dancer, dancing with grace, precision, and passion, and always leading the steps with her heart first. Please know that Courtney, Keenan, Megan, Grace, Joe and Kathleen, you are in my prayers.

I was devastated to hear about Courtney. She was such a sweet, beautiful, and talented person. Her dancing, her art, her poetry. I feel so privileged to have known her in school. I loved following along as her career in writing blossomed and am so sad her light went out too soon. My heart goes out to you all. May her memory be a blessing to you

Courtney was one of my brightest Latin students. I attended one of the Nutcracker performances where she was the lead dancer and was so breathtakingly graceful. I whispered to Mrs. Lindner that I felt as beautiful when I sang as Courtney looked when she danced.
For that reason, it was such an honor for me to be able to sing with the Schola at her funeral. I felt her beauty in my soul!

I met Courtney once in my college dorm at Franciscan university when she came to visit Meggie. I was so sad to hear of her death and will be keeping her, Will, and the Kampa family, in my prayers during this time. My heart goes out to all of you! ‘May the souls do the faithful departed through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen.’

I remember the Kampa girls from when my own sisters and I danced at The Conservatory (Keenan had given me lessons at the Kampa home when I was a young girl). In the few interactions I had with Courtney, I found her to be utterly vibrant and kind. I know her soul will live on the words she has written and shared with so many. I myself, as one of four sisters all so close in age and utterly devoted to one another, cannot begin to imagine the pain of this. But with such a beautiful and supportive family as yours, I know her memory will always stay alive. Much love from the Earnest family. We are thinking of you all.

I am so saddened by this and my love is going out to the entire family. I used to babysit Courtney (and her sisters) when Courtney was about...5 I think....she was so smart and funny and watching from afar as she grew up - and seeing all she accomplished - was a delight. People search and search for ways to make an impact on this world and that's exactly what Courtney did every day. She will be greatly missed but even more greatly remembered.

Joe, Kathleen, Keenan, Meggie, and Grace—my heart is broken and I am with you all in spirit today as you lay Courtney to rest. I so wish I could be there in person to celebrate her life and mourn her too-soon passing alongside you. Like so many others, I will forever cherish my memories of Courtney and our friendship through ballet and UVA. Her book of poems sits on my shelf alongside my favorite authors, and she will continue to live on through her words. Missing you all, and sending my love and prayers this day and always,

Words cannot express how heartbroken we were to hear of Courtney’s passing. Such a caring and gentle person with a passion for life. Angela and Courtney became friends through St Joe’s but I felt like we became family in Virginia. We will never forget the tea parties, paper mache pumpkins or egg decorating in your home. Sending our love and prayers to all of you.

I went to graduate school with Courtney and attended a reading where she shared a poem--I have thought of her poem often since then, and her beautiful presence as she spoke. Though i didn't know her well, she was obviously a special, brilliant soul. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

May God bless you and your family in this time of great sorrow. My heartfelt sympathy and sadness at the loss of your beautiful daughter Courtney. I remember with fondness the Kampa Family at St. Joseph's. Heaven certainly has gained a unique and beautiful angel. May she rest in eternal peace, and the many lives she touched be an inspiration of her light, her presence, her love, her works, and her gentleness. May God bless her family with His comfort and peace.

Absolutely heartbroken to hear of Courtney’s passing. She was such a beautiful soul with the most infectious laugh and endearing personality. She’s the best friend a girl could ask for and even though we moved away I still think of her often.
I’ll forever cherish all of the memories we shared growing up, playing dress up, dancing, laughing, and loving life.
My heart goes out to all of her family and friends. Sending all of our love from Ohio

I am sending much love to the Kampa family and Courtney’s husband, Will. Being five years older than me, I definitely looked up to Courtney when I was at The Conservatory, enjoyed reconnecting years later via social media, and reading her poetry that she sometimes shared. Her writing is a gift that will most certainly live on. It’s not very often that you meet such a talented and down-to-earth person, who also completely exemplifies grace. Courtney was that person. I loved occasionally running into the Kampas when I was home on breaks in Reston. Now that I live in Charlottesville and work at UVA, I’m sure I will think of Courtney often. I hope you all are leaning on your strong faith and close family. Sending lots of love and added strength to all of you.

My heart aches for Kate and Joe and all the Kampa girls and their families. All of my family has been touched in ways that I cannot put into words by Courtney's love for life and many talents. It only seems like yesterday that we were all together for art classes, teas, Challenge Club, and homeschooling activities too many to mention. All of those experiences are a part of my life and the lives of my children. They are part of the threads woven together that have made my kids who they are today. I can't thank Courtney enough for that. I will particularly always remember how Courtney took the time and gave her sincere attention to my sweet Catie, who is Courtney's age. Catie has always remembered that and has many fond memories of her friendship with Courtney. May God be with all of you as you remember Courtney. She will always have a place in my heart and prayers.

God bless Will and the Kampa family.

We were shocked to learn of your beloved and beautiful Courtney’s passing. May the wonderful memories you share and the love of family and friends be of comfort to you during these most difficult days. This time on earth is but a “speck” in relation to all eternity. You are in our thoughts and prayers always.

I am so sorry to hear of Courtney's passing. Courtney was one of the most beautiful people I have every known. We lived together our second year at UVA and she was an eclectic mix of absentmindedness, beauty, grace, and silliness. I have such fond memories of her. Courtney always brought a bit of goofiness to the day. I'll never forget the time she melted a teapot on the stove or that she introduced me to mukluks. One thing I'll never forget about Courtney is how much she loved her family. She always had stories to share about her sisters. I pray that God is with you all as you navigate through this difficult and terrible time. Courtney, I am honored that I got to know you and enjoy your friendship, RIP.

I am so deeply sorry for the death of your dear, beautiful daughter, Courtney. I have such fond memories of all the times that we shared together at St Joseph with Courtney and Fr Nicholas being in the same grade. You and Joe had the girls and Dan and I had the boys! I loved always loved to meet up with you at St Veronica’s and hear about all your daughters. May our Lord, Jesus Christ, by the merits of His Precious Blood, send His Holy Angels and His Blessed Mother to escort Courtney’s soul to Heavenly Peace. And may God’s loving Hands hold Will, y’all, Joe and Kate, and all her family close to His most merciful Sacred Heart and May the mantle of our compassionate Blessed Mother wrap around y’all with Her consoling mothers love. ❤

We remember the “Kampa girls” including their mom and dad very well from their youth. Always sitting in the far right middle pew at Saint Joe’s Church Sunday Mass. We know, as we sat right behind them most of the time. They were all fun to see with their matching hats and fashionable bright dresses of all sorts. Feisty, spirited, and just a wonderful family. Pure fun to watch them all interact. Affectionately spoke of it years later if we saw Joe and Kate. Our prayers are with you for God’s peace.

Courtney Kampa was an influence of blessing in our lives and in our daughters’ lives since the first time we met her in 1998. Courtney forged a path of femininity, beauty, joy, kindness, and love for all the younger women whose lives she touched, and she left their moms in speechless awe of her sweetness and exuberant love for life, people, her family, and her faith. Our hearts are aching heavily over Courtney’s passing, and nothing save the promises of our Lord Jesus Christ and the hope of Heaven will do for a balm.

My strongest memory of Courtney was when she tried out for cheerleading in elementary school. She was always so quiet in class but she ran in there screaming and cheering. Her smile was infectious. I’ll always remember it. She has one of the purest snd genuinely kind souls I’ve ever met.
