Craig Addleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 25 to Sep. 6, 2023.
Craig William Addleman, resident of Portland, Or., passed away on August 13, 2023. Born in San Bernardino, CA, he spent a number of years during his childhood in Puerto Rico and cherished that experience. Shortly after his son was born he moved up to the Bay Area to be closer to him. He settled in San Anselmo, married Barbara Gosh and had his daughter. He was a general contractor and also spent a significant time fixing up his own house for his family, including a treehouse for his children and the cats. He enjoyed going out into nature, spending time fly fishing, and one year convinced his kids to learn it with him. But his naturally intense curiosity led him to complete a year at San Francisco State and learn computers, leading to a career as a database admin. He became passionate about paragliding, spending weekends looking for thermals to lift him high in the sky, and spending a number of dinners and family events talking about the experience and how much joy it brought him. In these final years of his life, after his divorce, he moved to Portland, to be closer to his brother. He built a community for himself, and continued to work in technology, while also taking up gardening. In his final days he was proud of his organic vegetable garden and the quiet life he had built for himself.

Craig is survived by his son Aaron Addleman (Danielle); daughter Chelsea Azevedo (Mike); grandsons and Elijah Addleman; granddaughters Sophie Azevedo and Audrey Azevedo; former wife Barbara Addleman; and brother Kent Addleman (Lisa).

This is what I remember about my brother Craig:

As a child he enjoyed subjects like mathematics and chemistry, and collected fossils and rocks. Craig always had an interest in art, and once wanted to be an artist. He created pencil and charcoal drawings up through his early twenties.

Later, he became interested in architectural design. He enrolled in an architecture program and was working toward a degree but work and life circumstances took him away from his studies.

He enjoyed reading literature and fiction, having read almost all of Shakespeare's works, to give just one example. He once told me that when he retired he wanted to spend his time reading history.

He developed an early interest at age 15 in consciousness exploration and Eastern philosophy, of which Buddhism was his most recent interest.

He was a skilled craftsman, and once made his own furniture out of fine hardwoods, which were exquisitely crafted pieces.

He liked bicycling, fly-fishing, and paragliding. He recently took up yoga as an exercise. His most recent passion was organic gardening.

Craig was a kaleidoscope of a person with multi-faceted interests and sides to his character, and never boring. His absence will be deeply felt in my life.
