Cyndy Illies Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2021.
It is with deep sadness that the family of Cyndy Lee Illies (née Watling) announces her passing after a brief illness on February 11, 2021, with her youngest daughter, Krista Lougheed, by her side. Born in Toronto on April 13, 1959, Cyndy spent the majority of her life in Markham, ON, where she raised her children and lived near to her siblings. Cyndy worked in many administrative roles throughout her career, though her favourite occupations were being Mum to her three girls and Nana to her adored grandson. Despite suffering many health setbacks in her later years, Cyndy's characteristic creativity, positivity, zest for life, and curiosity never abated, and she continued to cultivate and maintain meaningful friendships until the end of her life. In the last few years, Cyndy enjoyed participating in the Living Room program courtesy of Evergreen Cares Hospice, and she loved her weekly knitting group, as well as her time singing with The Village Voices choir. In recent years she became a member of St. Andrew's United Church in Markham, where she reignited her spiritual life in a progressive and welcoming environment, under the ministry of Rev. Katherine Selby, whom she greatly admired. Cyndy was predeceased by her cherished parents, Bernice and Eric Watling, and her beloved sister, Leslie (Frank). She will be deeply missed by her treasured daughters, Leah (Spencer), Jenna (Kevin), and Krista (Marc), as well as her darling grandson, Otis; her siblings Hugh (Dena), Lorie (Debra), Bill (Kim), Lisa (Glen), and her many precious nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family, whom she loved so dearly. Cyndy will be remembered and loved by her countless friends, including the vivacious Monday Night Ladies, her dear A.Y. Jackson friends, and especially Debbie Jones, her best friend of 56 years. Cyndy's daughters would like to express special love and gratitude to Hanan Araso, Cyndy's devoted personal support worker of three years, who quickly became family to her. Cyndy's family looks forward to a formal celebration of her life when it is safe to gather together again. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Dear Watling and Illies families,
It was with much sorrow that we only recently learned of Cyndy's passing. (I have just surfaced from a year-long health issue)
Cyndy was a dear friend throughout Jr-Sr high school and beyond. All who knew her found Cyndy a perpetual source of optimism, humour and kindness. She shed light in any situation... along with joyful, contagious laughter.
As with everyone in her family, Cyndy had a huge heart. A very supportive soul in my formative school years, she will be fondly remembered.
May Cyndy's memory continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear about Cyndy's death. I haven't seen her since we were cheerleaders at AYJ. She had a bright smile and a joyous laugh. I trust her daughters both benefited from and inherited her love of life.

Cyndy was a sweet kind soul. A great Mom and Grandma. I know how much she will be missed. Always a smile and a kind word. Even in her struggles thoughts for others prevailed. RIP sweet Lady.

I am so fortunate to have had Cyndy in my life. We met on our daughters first day of SK, at St Matthews School, and that was the beginning of a long friendship. Cyndy had a zest for life and a laugh that I will cherish always. She was warm, intelligent, caring, and kind...characteristics that never changed. She always amazed me with her recall of people, dates and events...so remarkable! Cyndy loved to cook, entertain, set a lovely table, and had the most beautiful handwriting, an art that is lost now. We found ourselves always trying to improve our craft skills and Cyndy had perfected her calligraphy writing to a fine art. We tried computer classes, which set us into gales of uncontrolled laughter as we tried to find the “on” button! So many moments that I will treasure forever. My heartfelt condolences go out to Cyndy’s family at such a difficult time. Leah, Jenna and Krista, you were the apple of your Mum’s eye, she loves you always. To my friend, I will miss you.

I remember Cyndy from AYJ and was delighted to renew our friendship when she moved to Markham. Though we have not been in touch for years, I will never forget that smile and positive spirit. She will be missed.

I remember Cyndy from high school as being so beautiful, cheerful, positive and fun. She was the perfect cheerleader! I lost touch with Cyndy for many years but was fortunate to reconnect with her a number of years ago and she was just as I had remembered her. We enjoyed lunches out with the AYJ "girls" and I especially enjoyed our chats in the car, where I heard about her beautiful daughters and we shared stories about our grandchildren. Being a mother was the most important job in her life and she was so thrilled to be blessed with her grandson Otie! I will miss Cyndy's positive upbeat text messages "my simple pleasures" where she wrote about finding the beautiful moments in everyday activities, such as sipping pumpkin spice coffee while listening to classical music. She set a great example by always looking for the best in life. Cyndy was a beautiful person and I consider myself blessed to have known her. Sending my sympathy to Cyndy's daughters and family. I hope your special memories of her will help give you comfort in the days ahead.

Cyndy was a great person at AYJ during our high school years and even reached out to me when I suffered a severe stroke in December of 2016. I will remember her as a kind and caring person.

I was very sad when I learned of Cyndy's death. Cyndy always was so positive when most of us (read me) would not have been. I remember in high school her telling me stories about her family and being really envious of the very clear love and devotion her stories showed. The powerful support she had from her parents and the love between her siblings -- and Cyndy took all that love and support and more than paid it forward. I had not seen her in years when I saw her about a year ago and nothing had changed -- she was still that positive loving person who spread that love around. She will be well remembered and that is a pretty great legacy

I am so sad about Cyndy’s passing. She was one of my dearest long-time friends. When we talked or met, we’d laugh and laugh. I am especially sad for her girls and Otis. She had so much love and pride in them. Cyndy was a force for good and decency, and there’ll be a Cyndy-sized hole in my life and in the world from now on.
